My wife and I are going to my old ship's decommissioning ceremony on Oct 13th. I will be in SD from the 12th to the 16th and am looking for some places to take my wife. Now please keep in mind that I am on a VERY limited income at the moment so keep things cheap. We are NOT into the nightclub scene so please don't suggest any of the regular nightclub spots as we won't be going to them (I did most of that when I was in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club). Thanks in advance!

San Diego is one of my wife's and my favorite cities. We haven't been in a few years, but I can maybe give you a few inexpensive things that we have enjoyed in the past.

If you like Mexican food, Old Town Mexican Cafe on San Diego Ave in Old Town has some of the best you can get, in my opinion.

You can take a drive along the cliffs in La Jolla. Beautiful homes on majestic cliffs overlooking the Pacific ocean. If I remember correctly, there are several public areas you can stop to take pictures or just enjoy the view. Sunsets from this spot are phenominal.

Also we like to go to the little amusement park on Mission Bay (we went there the first time after dating only 6 months or so, so some of the attraction may be nostalgia). It has one of the last (if not THE last) roller coasters right on the beach you can find.

And, keep in mind that Mexico is just 40 minutes away or so. You can go south of the border for some very interesting shopping that won't cost you much at all. Just remember that in the open markets, the first price you are quoted is the sucker price, you can usually get them down to half or two thirds of what they are asking at first.

    Have fun.

Back when I was in the USMC I used to tend bar part-time at a place called "Foggy`s Notion. You could see North Island NAS from there as it was on Mission Drive. I`ll always remember seeing the harbor seals on the buoys and rocks there. If I HAD to live in Cal it`d be in the San Diego area. You can score some pretty good Mexican food in National City, too, just south of San Diego...pretty much every place you stop there`ll be good grub.

There is a elevated light rail/subway that I took from the Mission Valley Mall all the way to San Ysidro for what was $2 or $3 a few years ago. Then you can walk across the border where either a 8 block walk or a $5 taxi will take you to Revolution Ave. If the driver has a slow day he may wait for you. The wait for the return across the border was an event, about 45 mins of waiting in line as I recall. It was funny to see a bus stop, fill up and go about 2/3 of the way up and dump everyone back in line. The charge for this "service" was $5! They rented bicycles to ride across the border also for I think $10. Watching people is always fun....

Stay away from Cold Stone Creamery. $& for ice cream is a rip off no matter how cool the mixins are.

Post some photos of your trip, oh and enjoy! :)

Ok folks, leaving in 4 days for San Diego, thought I would bump this one last time and expand it to include sights we NEED to see in 'Diego while we are there. Bear in mind we are already going to walk around Old Town and go to the Zoo (and Animal Park). Any more suggestions?

This may be the last chance for some of you to "tell me where to go" LOL

Go to Blacks Beach. On the north end of town. It was a nude beach the last time I went years ago, could be shut down by now. Nothin like running naked in the ocean, nothing. We have had some really warm weather the last couple days in the OC maybe it will hold for you.

What ship? Seems like we decommission more that than we commission these days? I've been on five in the last 20 years and only two are left.
