I'm trying to speed up startup on a buddy's computer would someone take the time to look at the attachment and help me sort this mess out? Win XP service pack 3.

    Thanks

Your attachment is almost illegible. Try running this:

    Startup_CPL

Then tell us what is listed.

I ran start up cpl, but I don't know how to get a listing to you from it.

OMG, I've never seen such an overloaded group of startup items before! I'm going through it, and I can only find several that look to be necessary. I'll post back with a pared down log of the items to keep.

Thanks I knew it was a mess, but didn't want to take out necessary stuff.

    Hi,

The messiest part of that seems to stem from the iGive toolbar. I'd uninstall that first. It is probably listed in Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove programs.

Does all that text as in your first upload (startup.txt) show up when you try to view your startup items?

Yes it is organized a little better, but if look at it with ccleaner all of that googly gook is there.

    Hi abekl,

Try looking at his original startup.txt after renaming it to startup.html. After renaming open it in your web browser. You will see that a lot of it is html script. I just can't figure out what it looks like to kirk or how difficult it is to remove.

Kirk, if you have CCleaner installed then under Tools>Startup it provides a good way to delete/disable entries. I'd delete any that start with/include " a href" in a long line of code.

Attached is a cleaned up startup section. You can delete everything except for what's in this file. Good Luck.

    Does look much leaner.
Probably loads faster too, doesn't it?
A good defrag probably wouldn't hurt either.

Lean and mean is right. He's very happy since he's been putting up with this for awhile. Good idea on the defrag, I'll do that the next time I get a hold of my friend's computer. I learn something every time, but it's comforting to know Major Geeks have my back.

Nice work abekl and kirk48! :)

That was one one weird group of startup items. I'm guessing it was a poorly written program that added all that to the list. I've never seen anything like it.

Would I be mistaken to have him go to my computer. L/click on C: drive. Propertys. Tools. And do a system file checker? Put the check in both boxes, start. Next re-boot it would check the files. Just to see if it's good and no files need repair.

During one of the restarts of this process Windows checked the files for integrity. It did make one corrections. Wouldn't hurt to run it again when I do the defrag though. Thanks for the contribution.
