    Hey there,

Am travelling via bangkok 1 night lay over and was wondering if anyone can give some advice on the best malls etc to get some cheap hardware from.

Understand that the locals will just say yes to anything if it means your money in their pocket especially if they dont understand English... they arent big on customer service I take it...

So based on that, trying not to get ripped off by dodgey resellers, but at the same time looking for a bargin..oh geek heaven:cool - hopefully.

Only people whom have "been there and done that" or "been there and got done by that" need reply looking for first hand experiences and advice.

    Thanks in advance..:wave

Yeah was just hoping someone had taken the trip or been over that ways...will probably look online a bit more.

What I have seen suggests that you still have to be mindful of any purchase's, as the shop owners will say yes to anything if it involves getting your cash into there pockets...

This is VERY true! A friend was in the Philippines a few years ago and was shown a nice motherboard for a Pentium 4 for an amazingly low US$25. They demo'ed the board with a CPU and some RAM to show that it worked and that it was OK. They boxed it up, he paid and left. It stayed stuffed in a suitcase the next 10 days while he traveled. Upon getting home, he opened the box to find that they had pulled a 'switcheroo' on him and put an old 486 motherboard (with blown capacitors, no less) in the box and he paid for a working (used, but working) Pentium 4 board. They must have switched it out at the counter under the cash register or something, it was the same box, but not the same board.
    Be careful and BE AWARE!!!

Thanks dlb thats the sort of thing to look for aye..the switcharoo, the other store person probably distracts the unwitting westener with other deals of cheap software etc that probably sounds like a really good deal, meanwhile his evil counterpart does the switch, more or less under the nose or behind the back... when you get home....:cry

Have to make sure when purchasing that the cpu isnt covered in thremal paste or grease so it cant be an over clocked variant. I have only ever encountered one dodgey pc and that was a duron 1300 with a fan on it saying XP1800...think it had been clocked to 1500 or something cant remember now..but thats what didnt add up for me a duron cpu @1500MHz no such thing back then 1300 was about as high as they went....it was on a flash shiny purple mobo forget the brand but the other bizare thing and i have only seen it on that board was that the cpu was literally soldered into the mobo, you couldnt remove it there was no locking arm in the slot either...dodgey 101, when i found the reciept at work for the unit sometime later, it said that it was an XP 1800 cpu too!... yikes not this geek boss...look further down the line someone didnt do there home work...sorta what this post is about doing my homework, trying to find out the dodgey tactics these guys use...

Thank you very much (yet again) for your input dlb:cool:wave L8r
