I am helping a coworker with his home computer. It had a bad infection, no firewall or antivirus program, but was running a program called "Spyware Stormer" which I am not familiar with.

Before I got involved, he ran Spybot a few times and it found a lot of stuff, then I told him to uninstall old java versions.

I tried to install the new Java version, but got an error message about a bad digital signature. I installed and ran CCleaner. We ran Super Antispyware, and it found a bunch of stuff. MBAM found some stuff. He ran Spybot again, but I am not sure what the result was. After combofix was done and pulled the logfile up on the screen, I waited several minutes, but the desktop icons did not reappear, so I started task manager and ran explorer.exe, and everything seems to have been fine since. Finally, we ran MGTools as described, and it completed but with a few error emssages along the way.

The computer still has no antivirus software. A relative living in the same house has Norton running on his computer, and his license has room for another one. The alternative is either Avira, AVG or Avast. What is your recommendation?

Thank you again for your excellent help!

I certainly would not install Norton on this system:
    Code:
    Total Physical Memory 256.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 121.45 MB

The owner is lucky xp actually runs with that little ram.

The scans did their job, just a few more things to do:

Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    Viewpoint Media Player (Remove Only)

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Use windows explorer to find and delete
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    After a reboot...download and install:
    Java Runtime

Tell me how things are running.....and yes, install one of those anti-virus programs.

It's been a while... I have had a hard time getting to this computer, but am back at it now.

He has done a couple more scans of MBAM and SAS, and I have attached them.

I ran the disable feature on the Messenger tool. (I have tried to uninstall before, but was then told that I would have to reinstall Messenger in order to start MSN. After running this utility, Windows Messenger is not showing up.

I did the fixME.reg. It went ok.

Trying to remove the real folder, I was denied access. He has realplayer on the machine, and has a few music files he uses on it, but it was not running when I tried to delete it; in fact, I had just rebooted it.

I am posting this, and hoping you can help me "catch up" with this one. I am installing AVG 7.5 on his computer, I donæt know how it will work yet.

    Thank you again!

What malware issues are you still having? The scans did not find much, but you can see what they did find.

AVG7.5 is soon to be unsupported. The system needs more ram.

In the meantime.....If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

The only thing I can see active is the Real Player message center which all of a sudden has appeared in the system tray.

I think we can get rid of RealPlayer anyway, as I found .wma-versions of the same audio files he has as realplayer files.

Other than that, I think we're good. I'll wait a couple days and see if you think we should do anything about the real player stuff, and then go on with your finalizing steps in your latest post. Thanks a lot!

Either get rid of it or use a startup manager. Let me know.

And you are welcome......safe surfing. :)
