Last year my daughter joined aol. I entered her on my buddy list so when I was online I could see her online and IM her. When her icon came up I tried to IM her but she would never answer. I would call her and ask why she wouldn't answer me and usually said, "She nor anyone else was at home to be on the computer." AOL had no answer for this occurring except to say it was not possible to happen. My daughter has discontinued AOL but her icon will popup time to time. It states she is online. How is this possible? She is no longer a member of aol.

Know your waiting for an answer ...and personally am stumped ...however, I'm wondering if there is a slight typo in the address for that "buddy" ....so that it's showing someone other than your daughter....

I checked the address. It was her address. When I send her an IM I receive no response, however I will at times get a log off time.

My daughter is listed as online now. I sent her an IM hoping I will get a reply. So far nothing.

You mentioned in original post that she discontinued AOL account ....did she reinstate? If not, recontact AOL.

She has no internet service at all.

aol is a baffled as I am. They say, "This is not possible". But I am looking at it right now. As I stated the IM comes up I send messages to it, but do not receive a reply. At times I will receive a message on the IM that she has disconnected.

My guess is since it AOL and it has built in AIM, (I assume you are talking about Aol Instant Messenger (AIM)) someone may have her password and logs her on. Your screen names are still active after discontiuning AOL (or at least mine was and is)

Something else that occurs on AOL is something called "Phishing". Phishing is a process where someone's account password or other information can be stolen, and is a form of identity theft. It's entirely possible that someone phished her account password, and is using her account on AIM. Then when this account is logged in, it appears in your Buddy List. I would have your daughter log into AIM and change her password, and see if this happens again.

Just read the reply on phishing. Here is another interesting point. My daughter is not subcribed to aol nor does she have phone service. She is now on a cell phone.

Doesn't matter if she's no longer on AOL, the screen name she used for that account can still be accessed on AIM.

So does that mean someone is login on to her old account? She can't get to her account on aol. Her subcription is cancelled and her phone line is no longer active. How do they get access to AOL?
