Hello, I hope this is the right forum to ask this question. Here goes:

There is an AOL free trial icon on my desktop that came with my computer. I don't use AOL and so I would like to delete this free trial icon. When I try to delete it, i am prompted to go to the add/remove programs list. So this must mean that there is a program installed on my computer for this AOL free trial icon to pop-up. The problem is, I don't know what the name of the program is that controls this icon, it's not titled "AOL free trial" in the programs list like I would expect. How do I get rid of this stupid AOL free trial stuff for good?

    Thanks in advance!

    Try this:

Go to start > run > type "msconfig" without the quotes. Go to the startup tab, and uncheck anything that you think that may do with AOL.

By the way.... that will only remove the icon in the system tray ... which will stop the program from loading at startup and free you system resources. To completely remove the program, you need to examine your program files folder further and look for aol related entries.

There is no where in the add/remove programs about AOL?

What about right clicking on the icon and select properties, where is the path pointing to?

I once had it when I installed netscape, but there was an option in add/remove.
Also I could delete the desktop icon.

Hmmm, seems I need to think and type faster when I post.

Well I am able to delete the icon, I just want to delete the program that causes it to be there as well.

Hmm, I tried that and it says something about Reader Rabbit 1st grade, I knew my little brother was up to no good... I hope this solves it.

Looks like your bro hacked your PC. He's advanced. Have him post here. :)
