    Good Afternoon,

I recently purchased a used Compaq( less than 2 years old). Using a couple of tools, AdAware, Spybot, cleaned out over 600 bugs from the system. Next step was to remove programs I have no use for, one of which is AOL(I HATE AOL). I feel better now. Anyway, when trying to uninstall AOL in ad/remove programs, it keeps trying to log on, asking for user name etc... It will not let me remove it. I next went to the registry, also used registry cleaner, to remove all traces of AOL. Well, guess what? Still there. Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

I've never managed to completly remove AOL from a system once it has all its little hidden hooks into every part of the system, you think you have found all the parts but like the plague it pops up again.

I'm loathe to suggest this in my first post but you have done much of the steps I would take, but I would be concidering a complete format > reinstall afresh, over wasting alot of time and effort trying to fine every last peice of AOL :(

but before you think of re-install, just check the connection settings ( Tools > Interent Optiond > Connections ) in the likes of IE and Outlook Express for AOL references.. if found delete.

I'm with Halo, seems like you can never quite be rid of it. That said, try downloading RegScrubXP from here:

At least it will help you find the reistery enteries and let you delete them.

Make sure and back up your reg first though. I ended up manualy deleting everything I could find that had anything to do with AOL. With fingers crossed, I haven't had any problems in a few months.

the first thing you have to do is shut down aol, you gant remove anything that is running. look down in the right corner of your desktop and right click your aol icon, shut down, turn off, what ever the option is. now you can get rid of some of it. after all is done go to, start -search, type in aol, delete all that it finds. works for me. ed

Having just uninstalled and re-installed AOL v7 at least 3 times in the last 48 hours, I have had no problem uninstalling it. Try CCleaner-->Tools and select AOL if anything left.

If you still have a folder for AOL, simply delete the folder, if all else has failed, and run CCleaner-->Cleaner and then CCleaner-->Issues tabs. This should get rid of remnants.

I was trying to locate a problem with my modem (turned out to be the cable between modem and wall socket) which was why I was checking out AOL. Bazza

Used an AOL free trial briefly as a stopgap, while shopping for a new ISP. After uninstalling it, I was able to get most of the leftovers by searching for anything with AOL in the file name. There were a few files left, wish I could remember the names of them. For months, I'd find files I didn't recognize; so I'd google them, and find out they were AOL junk.
