Apple are now asking for Bank statements and Passport information (In Colour!) to purchase an iThing online.

The worst bit of this is that they are requiring the information to be emailed to them, and they are asking in an email that looks exactly like a phishing attempt.

So let's be careful out there.

This has been going on for at least 5 years and is nothing new. It seems to be Europe or Asia only that see cases.

A quick google search will show cases of this happening as far back as 2008.

We are only hearing about it now because half a dozen or so tech blogs copied each other for a story.

Apple came round and DNA swabbed me the other day because I downloaded the latest Itunes.

Turns out I am me but I'm now in police custody for pre-licking envelopes in the supermarket.

That's the first thing I would have thought . . . I was being phished.

American Geeks, please rest assured any Apple products purchased online or by phone through Best Buy will not be subject to horrible intrusions of privacy such as this.

This came to light a few months ago when my dad mysteriously received two unactivated iPhones via UPS. A scammer had stolen my dad's credit card number and ordered them. The only reason they were shipped to his house is that Best Buy got the "bill to" and "ship to" addresses reversed.
