I was in "Administration Tools" and checking out "services" on the local computer (WINDOWS XP, home edition). I compared the disabled, manual and automatic settings for "start up" with the default settings and there were some that were different (though I had never been in there before to make changes).

The "Application Management" setting said "Disabled" though the default setting was "Manual" so I changed it to manual, then hit the "start" button.

Then a window appeared and it said "Windows is attempting to start Application Management" .... "Could not start the Application Management service on local computer."

Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

Yes, I've been to Microsoft Help -- I can't figure out which 30 documents to paw through. Does this make sense to any of you WISE ONES out there?

Disable it, it's not supported in XP Home.

    Windows Service Pack means???

Thanks -- I actually did read that article before I posted this question BUT I thought when they talked about the Windows Service Pack (2003) they meant SP1 which I have already so I thought this should be enabled.... NO (?)

    I think you misunderstood.

This hotfix is not available to the public. I can't read the internal comments from home, so I don't know if it is scheduled for SP2, or is simply a "call for it" fix.

    I'm guessing SP2.

All this is saying is they repackaged it due to an issue with the old installer they were using.

I have the hotfix now. Looking at the name, its an SP2 hotfix.

I have never added a program (in over 100 programs added to this XP installation) by using the Add-Remove applet, so I have never seen that error, but the MS note was clear about
    1) the service not being supported in XP Home and
    2) the registry setting not being correct to DISable the service,
so I changed the service from manual to disabled and also changed the Profile 1 setting to disabled, and I assume (without checking) that the registry will make note of those changes.

Those who use Add-Remove for program installations might do well to do likewise (and thus avoid the error messages).

    Thanks for your help

OK - wasn't all CLEAR to me. But that's why I keep coming to you wise guys and you always come through for me.

    Thanks a bunch.

Oh -- one more question. So when you go in there and disable something under the GENERAL tab, are you also supposed to go to the "log on" tab and "disable" for profile 1 like Wisewiz mentioned? Because some things were disabled but not when I checked the log on tab -- profile 1 said "enable" though the service wasn't running and it was "disabled". Ya know what I mean?

Yep. Know whatcha mean. The answer, however, is not immediately obvious when you say "supposed to" (as in SHOULD or MUST). I just try to keep things consistent on my machines, so when I set any service to disabled and see that it's still enabled in the log-on panel, I click the Disable button there, too.
My tiny little spark of insight into such matters says that it CAN'T POSSIBLY HURT to have both settings agree, and it MIGHT HELP, if some unimagineable crunch happens down the road, and my computer wants to know for sure what I've actually told it to do.

Great -- that makes sense. I didn't understand why there were two "choices" and it seemed like they should both say the same thing.
