Are sites scanning my hard drive?

I can't say specifically that I have a malware issue but when (typically) on facebook there will be little ads on the side, mostly showbiz gossip type crap and usually from sites such as answers.com. I have been known to click on them. They will show ONE photo with a brief caption and I'll have to click 'next' three or four times before I get to the next pic. I have yet to make it all the way through any of these slide shows (for lack of a better term) because my computer will slow to a crawl and my hard drive is spinning at what seems to be an accelerated rate and quite loud.

I know I'm bringing this crap on myself by even clicking on these links but tell me, what exactly are they doing? Why do I hear the hard drive whirring like that? Scanning my C drive...for what?

And is there any method of blocking them from accessing my drive while still being able to view "Where is the cast of Little House on the Prairie Now"?

Sites like you are mentioning are notorious for having many many images, inline animations/videos, popups......etc. These can lead to apparent dramatic slow downs as you access page after page or image after image.

If you choose to access sites like this, you will have to live with the potential problems ( like you mentioned ) and also there is risk of infection. You must make sure your PC is properly protected. Also be aware that a fully protected PC will also show slow downs on sites like you are accessing because there are so many items on the web pages that have to be scan as being loaded.
