Are there problems with Norton Internet Security?

I've been hearing bad things about Symantec software lately. I have Norton Internet Security 2004 on my machine and I'm wondering if what I've been hearing is true or if its just over reactions by the panicky or the uninformed. Here's what I'm being told:

1. The Symantec company recently changed ownership and the new management is employing some very heavy handed tactics to keep their current customer base virtural prisoners. For instance:

2. If you let your subscription expire Norton will block access to the internet until you renew.

3. The Norton software is very difficult to uninstall should you choose to go with a competetor's product. The current uninstall routines available from the Symantec site leave registry information and software behind that interferes with the functioning competetors products if they are installed. In order to completely clean your machine of Norton stuff you need a special download that is no longer available from the Symantec site.

Please let me hear from anyone having these or similar problems with Symantec or from anyone who can refute these claims. Norton has been the industry standard for years so I'm somewhat dubious but my sources are computer-wise people who should know what they are talking about. Give me some guidance.

Norton is hard to remove, but not because of the reasons you suggested.

It's bloatware, it tries to do too much, and is in a race with other companies to see who can offer the most.


If you have a current subscription, you may as well use it, then consider changing.

It's not difficult to uninstall if you do it properly.
