I could be in better shape, that much is certain. I go on long walks several times per week, but, I could do more. I would like to improve my health. :)
What type of exercise regimen do you do to stay healthy?

I lost 8 pounds after doctor warned me (and I knew) that I was eating bad. There is no magic here and that's well documented.

    1: Eat right.
    2: Excercise.

I eat better, drink less alchohol and lost most of my weight walking as much as 8 and as little as 2 miles while actually running in VERY small amounts to jack my heart rate. I walk about 1 mile every 15 minutes.

From here any cardio is good. I like Tae-Bo and Urban Rebounder and use Urban Rebounder a lot. Working your core and burning fat is why diets fail. Just starving yourself does not work, eventually the body demands food.

Good luck. I started at 198 and and am now at 190. I am going for 175 and as you get older and\or down to the last 10 pounds it really slows down.

I walk up the stairs in work instead of getting lifts (elevators to those in the USA), once walked up to one office of ours on the 8th floor, got there and had to take 10mins to recover as I couldnt talk without sounding like one of those phone pervs who breathes heavy.

Eat healthy is something I do do, do not have many fries, sweets/candy or virtually no fizzy drinks, not eaten in McDs for 8yrs and mainly have rice and pasta with some potatos in various forms from roasted, mashed or baked.

Do you time your walks? Are they always the same distance? Try varying the time or distance. I vary my walk from 2 to 2.5km in roughly 20 minutes, (that's about 1.55 miles for the non converted), and I do this daily. Last night for the first time in many years I rode a push bike for 2 km. Do you have a bike? Do you have someone who can walk with you? (if you like the company).

Do you have an ipad or ipod. There are lots of apps to choose from that can help with ideas to vary fitness activities, lots are free. I'm trying a Couch-5k one at the moment. It alternates between walking and jogging over a period of 30 mins, and I choose to use a walking machine for it. Some others I found have exercises for your arms and legs, although they have set exercises, the apps can be adapted to suit you.

Extra exercise is not going to help much if your diet is poor. Eat smaller portions, drink water everyday, eat plenty of fruit, and never deprive yourself of the foods you like to eat, but only eat them in moderation.

If you are have trouble with motivation, try writing down your activity achievements, you'll soon see how much you have done. Using this method I have walked almost 62 kms last month, and have done almost 35 already this month. Whilst I have not achieved significant weight loss, I have definitely, firmed and toned up. Also I listen to music whilst I exercise, I find about 20 -30 minutes of exercise means I can listen to about 7 of my favourite songs without interruptions from anything and I really enjoy that me time.

    Plenty of options to explore.

    I'm a contradiction.
I encourage and inform about exercise and always encourage healthy eating and living.
But I don't live that way, I eat ok-ish, I eat a lot of things I shouldn't but I eat a colossal amount of vegetables and fruit. I don't drink alcohol but I do drink pop.
I smoke, around 10-15 per day.
My exercise is being on my feet and moving pretty much constantly for 10-13 hours a day.

What I have been thinking about doing is getting some exercise equipment and add some to it. My diet isn't terrible but needs cleaning up which my g/f and I have actually been talking about and looking into the last couple of weeks.
I need to stop smoking but that is pretty unlikely until I actually decide I don't want to smoke anymore.

    Am I fit?

Not really, I get out of breath quickly, but I do have stamina if I keep my breath, if that makes sense.

Although if it annoys anyone here like it does at my work, since Xmas I have lost 22lbs without actually knowing why.
I eat a lot of food and at the wrong times of day. I guess I'm burning it off at work and the occasional day of eating nothing more than a donut in a 24 hour period.

Man I'm terrible, anyone reading this should stop and run away.

I'm going to fix some of myself this year, starting soon. Promise.

    to Nedlamar:
22 lbs. since Christmas without knowing why?
If you ever figure it out, let me know.
Jan. of 2010, I weighed 195 lbs. Worked all day and a 10-15 mile walk was no big event.
April of 2010, for some reason, without any change in diet or routine, I was down to 145 lbs.
    Been slowly descending since.
Now I'm at 125 fully dressed
No wind or endurance. 300 yd. walk and I'm puffing like a freight train.
The only shape I can claim is terrible.

    125lbs? from 195?... That's a bit of a jump.
Something must have changed, like I said I think my loss is from terrible eating timing.
Muffin sandwich in the morning and I wont eat or sop for lunch break for 12 hours, by which time I'm feeling woosey, when I get home I figure it's too late to cook and have to be back at work in 9 hours, so will have cereal. Or nothing at all until the following day.

I'm pretty sure my loss isn't healthy.
Lets put it this way, I have weighed over 220lbs for 15 years, I'm currently 207lbs, I was 229lbs on xmas day, before eating :-D

But I strongly believe that as MA suggests, simple decent eating , REAL FOOD and a good amount of exercise is the best way to achieve decent fitness.

Many thanks for all of the replies folks! I have recently quit drinking beer which is helping my weight loss (I do have a glass of red wine on most days). My biggest gotcha is that I like to snack at night and it is usually the bad carbs that I crave. I will keep at it and focus more on my eating (I think I eat too much).

My wife and I are very active. We snowshoe, cross-country ski, downhill ski, skate, hike, bike, and just walk. We are fortunate because of where we live, we are close to all these amenities, and we like doing them which make it a whole bunch easier.
Despite all this I'm 6- 10lbs overweight depending on whatever, and I can't seen to lose it. This may not seem like a lot but for my size I should be 150lb, and any excess settles in my gut and looks funny. My problem is candy.
Our walking speed is about 4kph, so not as fast as MA.

@Nedlamar and hrlow2. Weightloss for no reason is usually a sign of a problem. I went from 150 to 135 once in about a month. I had an intestinal blockage. The doc fixed me up with some kind of laxative and the weight came back. See a doctor if you haven't.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

During jump school we ran 9 miles before breakfast, 9 miles after breakfast, all in formation with full rucksacks and M-16s...

Now? 'Bout the only exercise I perform regularly is dreaming about sex...:p

I weighed in last year at 260. Today I'm at 213 pounds as of this morning's weigh in.

I cut out the sugar, sodas for the most part, and cut way way way down on salt. I eat healthier and now I am doing cardio and weight training.

My flabby abs are now starting to emerge what could be half of a 12 ounce can of a 6 pack.

    i'm quite lucky really ... i think,

160 (11½ stone nearly) pounds and nearly 6 foot,
breakfast, dinner, tea, supper and snacks inbetween,

skateboarding and bmxing on the local skatepark are about the only bits of exercise i do - and then only when the weather is ok,

i've tried to put a little weight on but its just not happening, even at christmas it stays roughly the same,

    ah well

Well, it seems to be perfect enough. But only the sports practice is just not
enough physical work. I couldn't find anything better than cardio exercise. Its
just like a stencil that give a proper shape to body.

    This is a sad story

My kids are playing games on ipod. I won't let them friend anyone so they asked me to play so we can all friend each other. Now I'm playing Forestville and Tapfish and Scramble with friends. If I miss a day they come and ask me to send them something or check what they sent me.

I made a deal. I will play the ipad games but only on the elliptical machine. They have to let me exercise, I can't miss more than a day or they complain too much. It kind of works. They get so annoying that I have another motivation to exercise, even if it's 15 minutes. By that point i'm already up there and sweaty, I might as well finish the 35 minute program.

I've gone several miles this week with my feet going in tiny circles. I just wish I felt it in the glutes more, only my thighs are feeling it the next day.
