    Hello Major Geeks.

I have all ready posted a thread on this issue but no one answerd and it is still bugging me and i cant fix it at all. well here is my problem. whe i try to watch and kind of video, DVD or even, clips from the net. my computer just crashes, weather it is streaming or a proper movie on disk i look at it on task manager and it hits 100% does my cpu on the softweare, (Fire Fox if streaming for instance). i know it isnt my Media softweare windows media player 10 because i have reinstalled it and tried it on others such as real one and Quick time. also i know it isnt the codecs as i have downloaded them again and again and tried differant ones. i have also uninstalled all my recent softweare to see if it that. thanks for reading. hope you can reply.

Do you have a .dmp file located within:

    C:\windows\Minidump

If so, post it here as an atachment.....

If you do not have a dump file, please do the following:

Right click on MY COMPUTER, the select properties, then select the ADVANCED tab.

Now, click on Settings under "Startup and Recovery" UNCHECK "Automatically Restart". Also, make SURE that "Writing debugging information" is set for "Small Memory Dump", and "small dump directory should be "%SystemRoot%\Minidump".

Now, play another video, please post either an attachment of your .dmp file, or the results of your BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death).

can you try using a program like g-spot codec identifier to see how your computer is rendering the video stream. I had a problem like this in firefox where any streaming media would crash the browser. It turns out there was a codec in the rendering stream that was causing the problem. Uninstalling the codec fixed the problem. This is a common problem with computers with too many codecs installed.

did you follow jarcher's instructions about updating video drivers? Otherwise skip over to the spyware forum and get your system checked out

hello and thank you. but i have microsoft anti spyweare and spybot search and destroy. also i have avg as a anti virus, and zone alarm as a fire wall. and i scan my computer often and keep it up to date as if it breaks i have to pay for it and i cant afford to (i am 14.) thanks tho. i thought it was spy, weare but it isnt. i have installed divx previously and it still dosent help me also if it did i would still have the problem with my other media players. i personally think that it may be a faulty registary key but the registary is a gray area to me . Thank you again for your opinions can you please keep them flowing. UKARMYCADET

I am no expert so I really cannot say without more knowledge, what is wrong with your computer.

Jarcher gave some good recommendations that you haven't mentioned that you have tried. Update drivers. I'm sure you know how, but I'm going to post instructions anyway. Go into device manager (right click my computerm select properties, and press device manager on the hardware tab), right click your video card (under display adapters) and select update driver.

If this fails, try uninstalling WMP and all its codecs. (control panel --> add/remove programs) and try VLC Media Player . It has all the codecs you could ever need built in. That way, its MUCH less of a resource hog, and will play everything.

If that fails, then I would try checking memory. Memtest86 will do the job for you.

Then, if your memory checks out, a repair install of windows might be the cure for you. To do it, boot your computer with your windows (or dell OS disk, HP, etc -- if your machine came with winxp pre-installed) CD in the drive. Should be a snap from there.

Hmmm...I downloaded memtest86+ myself. The zip file came with an image which I had to mount as a virtual drive, but it didn't have anything in it, either. There's memtest86(no plus) available, too. I've used that before, and it DID work.

Check out the memory link at the bottom of every MajorGeek's page. It has buttloads of tools.

    please do this:
    1) Download Gspot codec identification appliance
    2) Install Gspot
    3) Run Gspot and in its interface load a video file
    4) Click "render" in the bottom left and tell me what it says in the audio and video paths

Does your computer freeze when using only WMP or other media players? have you tried using real player, or Divx player? Also, try downloading TMPGENC, I am sure there is a free trial around somewhere, search for it in google. That program is good for converting video files to more usable formats. once i had a problem where playing avi's would totally screw up my computer and it would automatically load into safe mode...is this happening to your computer? When you say it "freezes" does ctrl alt delete help? Sometimes if you press ctrl alt delete and then cancel out explorer.exe, then click on new task and start explorer.exe up again it often fixes a freeze (WinXP) and can save you from having to restart manually, at least this has been my experience. The Gspot idea is good too, but let the codecs load first before you browse for the video file.

how is your memory. . .virtual as well. . . .check them
Memtest86 is a bootable iso, not something you can just "run"
meaning you need to burn it to dosk using an iso burner
    then boot with it

if you cant give a mini dump file(for whatever reason)post a hjt log after you have ran through the read me:

If your pc is not so full, you could always start again, check the plug in the cd/dvd drive and make sure they are attached properly, if all else fails try uninstalling and reinstalling xp.
