arrogance in sports

I`m what most would call a MAJOR sports fan. I can watch most any athletic endeavor, at any level, except for soccer and women`s basketball. I DO enjoy indoor soccer, but they generally score more than three goals a day so thier is some actual excitement. The point I`m trying to get across is pretty simple I think, and you don`t need to be a sports fan to grasp it. I HATE athletes that think they are above the game...or better than anyone else in thier sport. Recently in particular there has been an NFL player in Philadelphia(I think I need not mention his name, after all he does it often, as does his slimy agent)telling the world how great he is, and how the rest of his teammates are keeping him from glory. There`s another in Buffalo that recently proclaimed himself the best back in the NFL. You see this type of chest-beating often in the NFL and in the NBA as well. I can`t say the same about the NHL or even lacrosse or college sports, but the fact that it occurs at all is nauseating. What ever happened to the highly skilled athletes that lauded thier team-mates and opponents and were gracious wether it be in victory or defeat. It sickens me to see these semi-literate, highly skilled, highly compensated athletes(doing what I did for the LOVE of the sport itself until I physically couldn`t do it any more)talk down to the opponents, team-mates, officials, and yes, the very people that pay thier salary, the fans. For me to take a date to an NFL game, what with gas, parking, admission, program, and refreshments...we`re talking close to 3 bills. NBA games are even worse. Talk about thugs. As much as I love to attend sporting events, the general attitude of a few, now all, players, has made it a tough sell. I can`t see myself ever not watching sports....I`ve always been involved myself and I can feel the thrill of the competition almost as if I were there myself. But...going to events and buying sports-related paraphernalia...well...thanks to guys represented by scum such as Drew Rosenhaus...time out.

That philedelphia palyer to me is the best WR in the NFL at the moment.
If the bills rb was behind the broncos offensive line i think he could post stats better that some other top rb's.
    My opinn

Not an accurate statement...at the moment, he's suspended, so he's "not in the NFL". ;)

An athletes' self-promotion is a by-product of all the media attention they get; if nobody saw them, nobody would care.

In 10 years they will all be forgotten has-beens. The true greats are always remembered and usually are loved and respected by the fans.

I generally don't watch NFL, as I prefer sports where they make more than three plays a day, but I agree with you about the arrogance bit. At least I think I do. I didn't read it.

My problem, of course, is the irony. You post a thread titled "arrogance in sports", and then in your first couple of sentences you go on to write off the most popular sport in the world as boring.

    Sasquatch77 MajorGeek

If I said the most poplar sport in the world is boring perhaps I was being a bit arrogant myself. I can admit if I step in it. I`ll always say though that soccer...or football as a lot of people call it....bores me to tears, and if I need a sleep aid all I need do is watch a bunch of guys run back and forth for three hours, arrive at a 0-0 or 1-1 score, and see 200-300 people injured in rioting afterwards. I`m s orry....I don`t get it.

And......if you`d watched ONE NFL game today you`d have seen MANY players make several plays....instead of in soccer where ONE player may make one play. Please do not take offense...just an opinion.

Is poker considered a sport? If not, why are all these tournaments carried on sports networks? And can anyone here admit to watching a complete poker tournament on TV, and tell me why? :D

It's pointless arguing about the merits of individual sports. I love Association Football passionately. I feel almost the same way about Cricket and Baseball. I can watch and enjoy Ice Hockey, if it's during the playoffs and the Canucks have a game.

Rugby Football, American or Canadian Football do very little for me, and I hate Basketball.(now that's boring)

I never watch individual efforts - Tennis, Golf, Boxing etc. I've no idea why those contests hold no fascination for me, but they don't. (Strange that, because Baseball is very near to a contest between individuals.)

I bet no poster on here mirrors my opinions. Everyone will have their own views.

I love football, I can watch it all day but I don't care for soccer.
Baseball and basketball I watch here and there but I do watch the playoffs etc. That's when I find them the most interesting.
Some of these players have the almighty attitude and/or violent behavior.
Some of these guys should've have been kicked out for good (I'm sure you'd be able to think of a few) for things they have done. They set such a great example for the younger generation. I think it's pathetic.
Sports are so popular that players seem to get away with just about anything. Why? The almighty dollar. No matter how good they are I think they're all overpaid. It's ridiculous.
As for Poker tournaments, The celebrity poker can be interesting to watch for a short while if there's a celebrity on there you like. My boyfriend watches the regular poker tournaments, all the way through (lucky me). I'd rather be playing it than watching it. I find it boring, but since he likes to play poker, I guess that's why he can watch it for so long.

Isn't that a quarter backs job? Nobody really makes "plays" football (soccer) is more of a free flowing game than a stop-start-stop-start.

    its only 90 minutes.
Perhaps if you learnt the rules you would find why it is the most popular sport in the world.

And to get back on topic, arrogance probably comes from being paid thousands and thousands a week and having thousands of fans cheering your name just for doing your job.

I do know the rules of soccer, or as many call it"football" I can see why you`d call it a free flowing type of thing. I get it. It still bores me. I was watching ESPN this morning and they were showing some soccer final...in fact Bob Kraft, the owner of The Patriots, had his soccer team in this final. Imagine my surprise when it went to double OT and the final score was 1-0. I will not belittle anyone for having thier favorite sport, regardless of what it is. This is one I just can`t do, that`s all.

Poker a sport? LMAO. What about Scrabble...ESPNll covers that, as well as the Scripps-Howard Spelling Bee. ?

Ill try and send you a video of England playing Argentina on saturday! If you think thats boring then you will never ever like football!

Having a high score doesnt neccessarily mean excitement!

Poker a sport, lol! Any "sport" where players dont have to be in tip top physical shape isn't a sport in my eyes!

I understand when you say that a high score isn`t necessary for the sport to be exciting. I love ice hockey and sometimes the score is low there as well. I guess I should have just said that outdoor soccer, no matter what the score, is too slow for my tastes.

I was glad to see the owners of Kurt Busch's Nextel Cup team dump him for the rest of the season for showing up Maricopa County (AZ) Deputies for pulling him over for reckless driving and suspected DUI.

I believe sports is similiar to music. To each his own. There are no bad sports nor no bad music (Unless I'm trying to play the fiddle). My one sport passion is Baseball, Football is ok and I really like motor sports. Beyond that, basketball, soccer, boxing, wrestling, etc etc is of no consequence to me. Same with music I am into Country but bluegrass is my passion. I like a lot of jazz and blues and some classic rock. but Soul, Rap, and classical are beyond me. As I have said.........To each his own.

What they should do is fire the whole lot...and start from scratch...let some blue collar working type folks fill the gap...like Michael Lewis from the Saints...

You know work your way up throught the ranks type thing, and if they get outta line...sack'em :p

I heartily agree IB4...like I said some poor dumb slobs playing for the love of the game...playin` as hard as they can because that`s the way it`s supposed to be done....and not talkin` s**t while you`re at it. I know too, that poker isn`t a sport...but you see two idjuts in particular...that think they are above the game....Phil HellMOUTH and Mike MataMOUTH... good gosh what ever happened to some humility in competition? That`s where I was going when I started this thread. One REALLY good example of good guys is the Manning family in football. Play hard and laud thier team-mates and opponents. It`s so simple...and having been a week/night and week/end warrior myself I know it makes it so much more fun if you can play hard and have a brew with the enemy...win or lose.

...oh yeah, they play hard, as long as it is on their terms. Are you forgetting how daddy Archie told the San Diego Chargers NOT to draft his boy Eli last year? What's different with that as compared to say, TO being traded to the Ravens last year and, in effect, telling them no way would he play for them because they had (and still have) no good QB? Finding someone that is lilly white in reputation is not an easy proposition.

Archie played his A** off for some horrible teams. I for one cannot blame him for not wanting to doom his kid to the same fate. I do see your point...and as it turns out Eli`d have been better off perhaps in San Diego, although probably as a back-up, BUT...Archie went to and played for a poor team, and excelled and didn`t complain. Peyton went to a poor team, played hard, didn`t complain and made them better. Looks like Eli is going to do the same. And for the life of me...I can`t remember any of them belittling thier team-mates, the opposition, or saying they were the best at thier position, and deserved better.

    Good Guys

No denying the talent level, but quarterback is just one part, albeit a primary part, of a team. Remember, the Ravens won a Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer at quarterback, and he didn't do squat with the Bucs before or the Seahawks and Browns after.

Lots of players played their tails off for bad teams. Walter Payton is the first that comes to mind. If Dan Marino had had a defense & a running game, no telling how many rings he may have.

You notice how quiet Randy Moss is now?

Word out of Philadelphia is that Terrell Owens appeal has been denied across the board. Score one for the humbler folk. :p
