Hello. My boss has a home business and his computer has contracted a major pain in the butt virus. He was getting popups and cannot update Adaware, AVG..his internet explorer is going crazy and won't go to correct links, it keeps going to asiuoqgusdbaksd.com real quick and then to various other sites. Sometimes when trying to get on internet explorer it would go to a local C//WINDOWS/ file that advertises spyware removal. I tried to download Firefox as another browser...it installed but won't open. I also tried to start it in safe mode with networking and go to online spyware scan sites such as bitdefender, trend micro housecall, etc.. and it won't let any of them work. It disabled taskmanager, and won't let me run hijack this, spybot S&D or any spyware program. This thing is dead set on not letting anything kill it. I did use the other office computer to download the updates for AVG and ran a scan that found a lot, but after removing and restarting the problem is still there. How much of an adventure is it going to be to try to get this thing..we need the main computer to do business. Help!! Thanks!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions. If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

If necessary, download the tools using another computer and then copy them to the problem PC. If something does not run in normal boot mode, try unplugging the cable to the internet and reboot into safe mode and then retry running the scan.

Ok I went through the guide and took a whole day to carefully go through each step. Boy, there was a lot of stuff found! I noticed something called "Smiley District" in the programs folder and it wouldn't delete. I found out it is malware I believe and I'll need help getting rid of that also, please. My boss has a MySpace page for his business and I hate MySpace, I think it's a sieve for nasty crap, I believe, correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, hopefully these logs will help eradicate this nastiness before my boss gets back in town Wednesday night and I'll be a hero!

What is the below 71.6 MB zip file for?
Why does the same file appear in C:\Program Files as over 2 GB insize?
    Code:
    2006-12-16 13:44 2,139,054,820 -c--a-w C:\Program Files\dr_ddo_inst.zip

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall Viewpoint Media Player as requested in step 1 of the READ & RUN ME.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Smiley District] C:\Program Files\SmileyDistrict\plugin.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Qxspdkaq] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\??crosoft.NET\m?hta.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Ok. Did the items you said. Sorry about the Viewpoint. The list was so long I missed that one. While waiting for you to get to my post I read up on the Smiley District and used hijack this and Killbox to get rid of it. I think that messed up the notepad script dragging into Combo Fix to have the Smiley stuff in there because I got an error message regarding "catch me" when restarting, so I just ran Combo fix by double clicking.

Here are my logs. I'm going to plug the cable modem cord in and see if I can update AVG and Adaware and use the browser. Also, I was thinking of putting spyware terminator on his machine to try and stave off the onslaught as I know he has to use MySpace. Any other software suggestions or words of warning I should give him? Thanks for helping me with this!

The fix does not work unless you drag the CFScript.txt file ontop of ComboFix. Just double clicking combofix.exe does not run the script. You need to run it properly and do everything again that was posted after the procedure with ComboFix.

You need to answer my questions please.

Everything he and you should know is in the below:

Ran the CFScript fix and fixme.reg...worked fine. Then ran Ccleaner and GetLogs.bat in MGtools. Here are the logs.
I don't know what those dr_ddo files were. I tried to explore the archives but it gave a message that the archives were not valid, so I deleted them. Probably old band artwork are artist related graphics/audio etc.. not sure.

Things seem to be running great! I can update AVG and Adaware now...use the browser with no problems...I also would like to use the registry cleaner you guys recommend on your software page and want to install Spyware Terminator as real time protection in addition to SuperAntispyware to scan.

I'm sorry if I caused you headaches. It was not my intention. I was panicked and desperate. I truly realize the invaluable service you provide..in effect giving people the steps and knowledge to do what computer techs would do at a shop and charge a lot of money for. You are truly good people and are doing an awesome thing to combat all the scum out there trying to do harm.

I truly thank you again. :clap

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

Registry cleaners are a topic for the Software Forum. ;)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. You can uninstall SUPERAntiSpyware now.
    2. We recommed you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as a scanner. It uses no resources except a little disk space until you run a scan.
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combo-fix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the cf" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\cf folder from combofix.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
