Greetings MG helpers... I have been looking over the steps required in the "READ & RUN ME FIRST" thread for two days doing all the scans.

I got rid of virtumonde and smitfraud with the two separate fixers, but I have more nasties.

I attached the runkeys, newfiles, and my hjt logs.
(I will also attach counterspy, bitdefender, and panda logs..)

I ran counterspy in normal mode - not safe.

The Bitdefender scan would not let me save the file (probably because of java v. 5) so I just manually put the things it detected into a text file..the scan completed fine.

Uninstall the CounterSpy trial now since we are finished with it.

Also uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {84660045-44F4-40AF-87EB-40159B44F69D} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {889E1A8D-F6FE-4ED1-9AED-4E867D4F1176} - C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\hoketozyj83122.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A3FFAB4A-4534-41DF-81DC-4160DFF96C94} - \

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

I followed all your steps. Thank you so much for helping me.

I downloaded a new software - some Earthlike/People PC crap because I was doing an offer on a rewards site.

I uninstalled People PC and I know it is not spyware or anything, but some of the software still shows up in HiJack this.. so I am guessing I just simply check off those and fix them, but I will wait for your approval.

Here is my avenger / getrunkey / shownew logs

it seems that the internet explorer .dll nasty was unsucessfully removed.. i don't know. I hope I can get rid of it.

Internet explorer used to direct me to a specific site intentionally whenever I typed any sites in
but after I did the counterspy scan, that stopped. And IE still does not get re-forwarded to that spam site when I type in sites.
I wonder if that .dll is still having an effect.

Oh and the reason I did not upgrade to Java 6 before is because I have windows xp sp1 .. Its not a problem that I upgraded to Java 6 even thought "it was not a supported operating system" for the upgrade, right?

    Regarding the last two posts
Sorry, I forgot to run CCleaner before doing HJT/avenger/shownew/getrunkey

I did HJT/shownew/Getrunkey again and have attached them to this post so you can ignore the previously posted gjt/shownew/getrunkey logs if you want.

Yes and delete the folders for it. Note for future reference, never download or install anything while trying to fix malware problems unless the person helping you requests it. Wait until you finish removing your malware.

Not true. It's gone and so is the line from your HJT log.

Java 6 update 1 (and now update 2 just came out today) works fine with WinXP SP1

You logs are clean but I had a typo in my Avenger fix. Please manually delete the below folder:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\o02PrEz

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    9. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Alright, I deleted all folders/files relating to People PC.
I have had System Restore on forever, so it is not off at the moment.

I did not want to update to SP2 until I was completely sure everything was gone.

Asquaredfree found a variant of win32.downloader... i dont know what happened
I did a "Smart Scan"... I attached the log.
Should I do a full scan with it?

I did not notice that file in your July 4th log but it was in the log from ShowNew. A-squared go though. You need to complete the steps I gave to you which includes toggling system restore to remove infected restore points.

  10. The Dabola

    The Dabola Private E-2

    I don't understand "a-squared go though". I quarantined win32.downloader, should I uninstall a-squared - or should I do a full system scan? Thank you :)

And You are telling me to complete these steps right?

  11. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

That was a typo. It was supposed to say A-squared got it though.;)

You can uninstall it or you can keep it as a backup to your antivirus. That's your decision. You don't need to run a full scan but if you want to it is not a problem. But you really should have completed all the steps I gave to you first! Yes you need to complete them.

Alright I just did a full scan with Asquarefree and attached the log
    I found Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Agent.bhm - and I quarantined it.
The trojan was in a file that my cousin sent to me a month ago,
but I had not opened it anyway. I will have to tell him there is a trojan in it so if he still has it, he can delete it.

asquare also found Trojan-Downloader.Win32.VB.aya in system restore (I did not touch this. Should I quarantine or delete or leave it alone? I am guessing I should disable system restore so it flushes the restore point)
i did system restore at like 6 AM today... but apparently I had not gotten rid of all the malware apparently (asquare finding those trojans)
I am not supposed to do steps 9 and 10 until my system is clean right?

I followed Steps 1 through 8 but 9 and 10 cannot be done yet because I want to make sure my system is clean.

    Thank you.

I forgot to mention that I have windows genuine
This means I can upgrade to SP2 from the windows update site right?

the update site works fine for me, but of course i cant update to sp2 until i finish my malware removal.

    thanks

If you look back at one of my first cleaning steps given you will see I had you delete one of these files. I had you delete:

    C:\Documents and Settings\sameer\Local Settings\Temp\THI2684.tmp\mxTarget.cab

The problem was that you were only posting logs from the user account named shawn not sameer. Thus some malware was not being seen. You probably should clean all user accounts on this PC to make sure all malware is gone.

I believe I have already stated multiple time that System Restore needs to be flushed. Did you disable system restore as requested then reboot and re-enable it?

  15. The Dabola

    The Dabola Private E-2

Thank you chaslang. I just turned off system restore, rebooted, and then turned it on.

Yes you told me to disable system restore before but I had thought that I still needed to some scans but I think I was wrong confused

Do I have to do anything else? :)

Oh and I did delete that mxTarget.cab file.. but should this trojan be showing up even though I deleted it?

  16. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Just everything in the final steps I gave you. And perhaps you should clean the other user accounts to be on the safe side.

  17. The Dabola

    The Dabola Private E-2

Alright. What should I run on the other user account? CCleaner.. or should I scan with like Counterspy, Nod32, and afreesquare?
I thought a lot of scans that I have done scan through the whole computer - so I am not sure which scans to run on the other username.
Should I use diagnostic startup, disconnect the internet and do a scan on the other username with (idk which program)?

For some reason, I cannot get to Safe Mode when I restart. When I press f8 it just asks me what I want to boot up with "floppy, cd, or hd"

Once I am done with that, I should upgrade to Sp2? Are you one who believes that I will be fine with SP1, or I should upgrade?
    Thank you. :wave

And do you recommend I back up my files?

    Do not use diagnostic startup!

Many scans do check for certain things in other user accounts but it is best to boot into the accounts to perform proper checking. The accounts will have to be changed to have administrator priviledges (assuming they do not have this) to run all steps properly. Just run the below on the other accounts, but only do one account at a time to avoid confusion on what we are working on:
    • CounterSpy
    • GetRunKey
    • ShowNew
    • HJT
See the READ ME which explains how to get into safe mode using MSconfig.

You should upgrade. Since you were already the kind of user that gets infected, you would be safer by running the current version of Windows XP. Will it guarantee your safety......NO! That is something only you and other users can do by being more careful (as mentioned in the How to protect thread).

It is highly recommended to do this. Better safe than sorry. I personally have never had any isses upgrading but that does not mean you will not.
