Since there is no longer a Hobby section, I figured I'd post in the Lounge. I'm looking into getting a telescope. I have never had one and would be completely new to the hobby. The reason for my post is I need some suggestion on decent beginners telescope for around or less than 100-150 bucks. Any help would be great. I have been searching Craigslist for used beginners telescope, And I did come across these. http://knoxville.craigslist.org/spo/3036124561.html
Seems like a good deal, but I don't know enough about telescopes to telll if they would be something I need. Just by looking thru some website, I've seen some telescope can sell for as much as 25,000 dollars. rolleyes Since I already have at least a dozen hobbies, hunting, fishing, table-tennis, pool, gaming, and cars just to name a few, I can't convince my better half that I need a $300 telescope. :cry So I'm gonna settle for a lesser telescope, just to make sure I'm gonna like it. ;) Thanks guys!!

    Hi lego126

Just an FYI is that we merged all the Hobby type sections together in the Cell phones, cameras, MP3 players and gadgets a kind of a one area for non pc stuff but for cell phones, mp3 players and gadgets (telescopes would fall under this).

I used to be into astromomy many years ago but my knowledge of current telescopes would not be great, so my advise for a new comer to astromomy is to, if you have one close mind, is to speak someone from either...

    1. Local astromomy society
    2. Local universities astromomy dept
    3. Astronomy specalist at a museum

as they should all have good info on what is best to buy for a novice to start with and they may have other tips etc

This maybe a good guide from astronomy.com HERE to read on the different types of telescope.

Thanks for the tip Pooh, I've already made it a point to attend one of the local Smoky Mtn. astronomy Star Parties. And I've been reading up on them for the last few weeks. Hopefully, I manage to get a easy to use, user-friendly telescopes on the vast market. :cool
