I bought a new Asus G71G from a private seller 2 days ago (unwanted gift) that had not been used. I started Windows Vista, with a desire to immediately upgrade to Windows 7. It booted at first showing "Not Genuine Windows" in the lower right corner, and now it will not boot at all.

I have installed no programs nor connected to internet yet. It's fresh!

I tried using the Recovery DVD, but get blue screens with messages such as PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

    and

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

The last driver that loads in SAFE MODE is /windows/system32/drivers/disk.sys ... then it blue screens

And, since changing the boot sequence in F2 Setup to look at the DVD first, I see "BOOTMGR is missing, Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restarn" (yes, restarn)

I'm not so techie and am totally out of ideas. Worse, I live in Europe and return next week. I'm hoping that some of you experienced people might comment about this.

    Thanks

Supposedly never been used and shows not genuine...the two items do not go together.
If it had never been used, you should have been asked a series of questions about location/time zone/preferred keyboard to set up the windows for your use. You would need to set up one or more user accounts and be asked to create passwords.

As far as I am aware, the not genuine comes up after the computer is connected to the internet and the WGA runs. Only then can it be determined if the windows installed on it is genuine or not.

You might get a notice about windows needing to be activated if it sits a long time. I'm not sure about that though.

With all the problems and the non-genuine windows and being lied to about it never been used, I'd want my money returned and I'd search for a new computer without problems.

    Thanks.

I resolved the problem, at least for now, and am using the laptop to write this.

It was new, unused and sealed. And the message "not genuine" was real, and so were the hours of problem solving.

A problem was that the Recovery DVD program kept crashing, preventing recovery.

I interacted with the laptop for maybe three hours ... and I am not very computerized. I had a bad few minutes when I thought I was done, but everything stopped and would not restart - then I found that someone had unplugged my power cable.

Now I have a brand new G71G laptop with 6GB RAM, 500 GB HDD and 1GB video RAM for $1000. I feel quite deserving!

And I need to turn off these damn lights all over the case.
