asus p8z77-v lx motherboard

Am new to building PC's and have bought the asus p8z77-v lx motherboard, I installed the Processor etc and connected all the cables and everything lights up as it should do, I have no beeps etc, but the problem is I get no signal to the monitor, do I need a separate graphics card to use this board as simply connecting a VGA cable to the onboard connections wont work, as I get no signal.
I have reset the bios, cmos, took out the memory etc and did what ASUS said do on there self help website but it still wont work :crybaby

any ideas ? do I need a PCI or a separate graphics card for this to work ?
