I have an ASUS A7V mainboard with 2-ATA100 connectors and 2 IDE connectors. I have 2 HDs, with jumpers set to cable select, hooked up via 1-80 pin cable to the primary ATA100 connector and 2-CD devices hooked up to the IDE connectors via 2 seperate cables. This setup works fine with Windows 98 and XP dual boot, but Linux MEPIS live cd can't mount my HDs, I think because they are on the ATA100 channel. Does anyone know if there is any way to make it work with Linux on the ATA100 as I don't want to change my setup, but would like to install Linux

it might be because your kernel doesn't have NTFS/FAT file system support you would have to read you documentation .. might try logging as su and type cat /etc/fstab to see what drives are actually loaded

but www.linuxquestions.org is a very good site and you should be able to find your answer just by searching the forums there ... linux isn't as easy as windows so you may have to do some fancy foot work to get it to run the way you want it

Not sure what "logging as su" is, but I've logged in as both demo and root and done the cat /etc/fstab and it has both of my CD devices and my floppy, but no HDs.It showa a line before and after the drives it has, which matches one of the errors I get when trying to access HD, "noauto, users...blah blah" I'm new to Linux so don't understand the kernel missing NTFS/FAT stuff, but I pick up fast if one can elaborate on this.
This is info from cat /etc/fstab.
    demo@ttyp1[demo]$ cat /etc/fstab
    # Static entries below, do not use 'users' option in this area
    none /proc proc defaults 0 0
    none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devmode=0666 0 0
    none /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
    none /dev/pts devpts mode=0622 0 0

    # Dynamic entries below, identified by 'users' option
    noauto,users,exec 0 0
    /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,users,dev,ro 0 0
    /dev/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 noauto,users,dev,ro 0 0
    /dev/floppy /mnt/floppy vfat,ext2,hfsplus noauto,users,dev 0 0
    noauto,users,exec 0 0

yea ... I'm still a linux n00b myself ... that's why I suggested going to linuxquestions.org ... there are some linux users on this forum but you'd probably get more help there ... i go there with all my questions and 99% of them are solved just by searching the forum as it's pretty big

depending on your distro NTFS and FAT may not be installed in the kernel ... therefor you wouldn't be able to view any of those file systems ... since XP and 98 use them it wouldn't be compatible ... but I never had a problem transferring files between my PCs ... in that respect

su is just and easier way of logging in with root priveledges ... you type su in the terminal and then it will prompt for your root password

you could try putting a directory in /mnt .. call it "wxp" although the name doesn't matter ... then typing
    Code:
    mount /dev/hda /mnt/wxp
(if you didn't call it that then use the name you used) ... and that *might* mount your primary master into that folder .. although I'm doubting that will work but it won't hurt anything other than create a useless directory in which you could later delete

Yeah, thanx for the link, Pyrate, I posted in there. Not looking good for me now. I'm just too attatched to my current setup to let it go for Linux :(
I'll try what you suggest, although, I'm not just a n00b, I just started with the live CD this week, so I really don't even know how to do it, but I can probably figure it out with some time in there, I just wish I could install

that's a link on how to install slackware (I'm not sure you could install off of a live CD but I really don't know) ... as the live CD is mainly to try it out or to do repairs . I'm sure there are other uses .. i used that tut ... but it's for slackware 9 not the current release(10.1) and you have to xorg.conf ... i forget the command right now ,... instead of what it says or you won't be able to boot into X ... the trickiest thing is creating the partitions as you need to set them up .. it's not easy like windows where you can just have one partition .. and linux doesn't use the (don't know what to call it) 'drive system' windows uses ... so you won't have like a C;\ drive in linux

BTW you can find slackware at linuxquestions

I tore into her and rewired on the standard IDE ATA66/33 connectors and all good drives came up in MEPIS. Now I am having trouble installing. The drives show as follows:
    hda1/(C:\Win), hdb1/(D:\Win), hdb5/(E:\Win), and hdb6/(F:\Win)
If I mentioned before, D:\E:\F:\ are all one HDD:3 10GB partitions of a 30GB HDD.
I desire to install on hdb6/, but when I try to install from Root of Live CD, I get only hda/ and hdb/, so I select hdb/ and the next screen is to select partition, and the box for /root only has "none" in it. and that's as far as I can get until I get some more help there. QT parted err's saying "not possible to make new partition table" stuck again!!!

I know nothing about Linux nor want to and am going way out on a limb here, but have you tried Master/Slave heirachy as opposed to Cable Select?

Thanx for input, yes, when I rewired this AM, I set all drives up as master and slave instead of CS.
