Hey guys, I am running Windows XP sp1 on a new Dell- and the other day my computer completely locked up (couldn't move the mouse and no programs responded) for about 15 seconds, and then it went away. I checked the event viewer and it said :

    ID: 9
    Source: atapi
    Version: 5.2
    Symbolic Name: IO_ERR_TIMEOUT
Message: The device, %1, did not respond within the timeout period.

Explanation: The attempt to read or write data timed out.

User Action: If there is a disc in the CD_ROM drive, it may need replacing or cleaning.

The thing is that there was not a cd in the cr-drive. This has happened maybe 4 times within 2 weeks, and I really need to fix this problem. Please help me!

See if you are running anything relating to your drives on startup. Programs like Roxio and Adaptec do this and are not needed. They sit and monitor the drive for you to insert a disc. Unless your burning non stop, its a source of headaches and resources then anything else.
