    Greetings,

I have an AthlonXP in my main system right now and I was curious about the idle temperature for this series of processor. I've had it overclocked for some time now and it's been extremely stable; it's overclocked to 3200+/2.2GHz on an ASUS A7N8X-X nForce 2 board.

The current idle temp is usually between 63/145 and 64/147.

    Is this safe?

AMD says Die Max Temp should not exceed 90c/194f

I suppose it should be okay then. Running games, it usually doesn't jump any higher than maybe 15 degrees.

To be on the safe side though, I bought a new (better and cooler) heatsink for it and installed two new fans in the casde (brings the total to four), and I'm going to go out today and snag an 800W PSU. Just in case. :p

    Thanks for the info.

    No Not safe!

Those temps are too Hot, Hotter temps = shorter life
Expect to see problems once you hit near 65c, like freeze up's etc.

Also keep in mind your temps are only as accurate as the sensors reading the temps, many are off + or - 10 degrees

Best performance/life keep em under 50c

    Two Final words ;)

    Really?
Try running Prime 95 (blended Torture test) for minimum of 8 hrs :major http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4363
    Then some 3Dmark's
If you can do the above then your stable;)

Check your Temps while running Prime

I've played Oblivion (which is a CPU *and* GPU heavy game), Half-Life 2, World of Warcraft, and several other titles on this CPU for a good 9 hours at a time and it's been fine. The only reason I originally asked was because someone I know said that the temps aren't fine.

I've also heard that this board/CPU combination I have; the AthlonXP 2600+ Barton Core and the ASUS A7N8X-X nForce 2 are extremely solid together when overclocked.

There are several NF2 based MOBO's that OC well (NF2 creme of the crop for socket A's)
    Ya, Bartons = Good chips

    I have a DFI Ultra B, NF2 running a XP 2600 mobile Barton 10 x 250Mhz at 2500MHz, 1.9 volts on the CPU (stock is 15 x 133Mhz at 2000Mhz 1.45volts)
I use a ThermalRight SI-97a HS & Artic Silver Ceramique with a Modified 92mm Thermaltake UFO fan
My max temps under load is about 48c
