ATLBU32 has taken over, locked out of computer, can't access Safe Mode

I've been working to clean up spyware for past week using SpySweep to remove ATLBU32, CWS and others which kept re-installing after efforts to remove it. I'm new to this, came across Major Geeks site today (great resource!) and started stepping through Major Attitudes' READ ME FIRST thread 35407 on Basic spyware removal.

Working with Windows ME, I've disabled system restore; enabled view of hidden files; downloaded additional recommended spyware tools; re-booted in safe mode and my system stops (I can move the cursor-arrow, but cannot access any programs). I've re-booted and tried in normal mode, same result... except when I try a soft boot (Ctl-Alt-Del) I see the only program running in the background is the ALTBU32.exe. I'm effectively locked out!

Any Suggestions, please.

 

- Download HijackThis 1.99.1

- Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

- Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

- Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

- Run HijackThis and save your log file.

- Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).
