Attach word doc to Outlook Express

I want to attach a file I did from Word to OEx, which I use.
When I try to attach it, MS tries to download Outlook, set that program up, and attach the Word file. I do not want to use Outlook.
I tried to change where I save my Word file, but nothing I have done will get it save anywhere but Word.
Could anyone tell me how to get the file attached to an OEx email I want to send, and/or how to save the file somewhere besides MS Word?

    Thank you

although not what I had in mind, and I hope to learn how to do the attachment anyway, I copied the text directly to the body of the email, then sent it.
Probably good thing I hadn't written a novel.

Your Word files are "saved" in Word, they are saved in some folder on your hard drive (or an external drive) such as My Documents or any folder you designate.

This makes no sense whatsoever. Outlook is not free and trying to attach a Word file to an email message in Outlook Express has nothing to do with Outlook.

Do you have Outlook installed as part of Microsoft Office? What version of Windows are you using? What version of Office?

Please explain, step-by-step, how you are trying to attach the Word file to OE.

Thanks for reply. The info you asked for -
I am using Win XP Pro W/sp3, MS Word 2003
I do not have Outlook, nor do I want to use it.
I went to MS Word, went to "Open" section and brought up file or document that I wanted to send via OEx
I went to File and the Send To, then Mail recipient as attachment.
I believe that answers your questions
That brings up a message about creating a profile by going to Mail icon, and doing that brings up 'Startup' for MS Outlook

If you open Word and click on Help and then click on About Word, what version of MS Office do you see there?

That doesn't adequately answer my question. Spelled out in words, exactly what version of Microsoft Office is shown there? Is it Microsoft Office 2003 Professional, or what?

I have Microsoft Office 2003 Standard Edition
    MS Office Word 2003(2) (3) (4) (5)

If you use Send To then your default email client will open, which would seem in your case to be Outlook. To attach a file, any file, to a message in Outlook Express you first start a new message in OE and then use the paper clip icon to attach your file. It would also be a good idea to set OE as your default email client, then you could use Send To without these problems.

I don't see how it could be possible for your default email client to be Outlook if, as you say, Outlook isn't installed.

I picked up on the latter part of your reply, so I went back and found that somehow Outlook was selected to be my default email. Several months ago I had HD failure, and basically had to reload all. I guess in midst of all that I did not set my email default, and Outlook was selected for me.
I corrected that problem, ran a check on the setup, and OEx is now my default email.
Appreciate your solving this for me.

Well, now we know that statement was not true, and that was point of my questions about your version of Office. Actually, I was bit off-track since all versions of MS Office 2003 came with Outlook. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Office_2003 shows the components of the different versions of Office 2003.
