Re: ATTN: Firefox users! Want a faster browser?

Yep and I'm glad all is Peace and Love and Kumbayah :-D and has seemed to work-out for all ...

I really was simply attempting to be helpful here myself (yes with you too J. R.) - I was merely trying to convey that the particular term selected was being "heard" (read) a bit differently than you had (rightfully) intended, and that I was not "blaming" or criticizing or critiquing you for anything - on the contrary, I was alluding to the rather "wild west" nature of the tech-beast (tech-terminology), itself.

No harm (intended) - no foul (intended).

I'm fairly pleased with pale Moon on my XP machine (with speed and the "L00K" AND Add-on's of FF) - though will HAVE TO take the Migration Tool issue that I'm having to a new thread if I can't figure-it-out otherwise.

I "think" :confused I can live with any potential security issues on the XP machine ... at least I sure HOPE so :confused

Still have yet to "test" it (as unscientific as that may be) on my Vista machine...

    Thanks...Peace-OUT!

Really? Securing one of my PCs as best as I can, is always a deciding factor when choosing the software that I install on it; minimizing risks to the OS and data it contains, so to speak. *No "flaming" intended - just tweaking your thoughts abit.

Re: ATTN: Firefox users! Want a faster browser?

Thanks doc, and I appreciate that (I sincerely do), but are you saying you don't believe Pale Moon to be "Secure"? And if not, to what extent would you say it's un-secure?

I mean, isn't it True, that everything connected to the internet has "some degree" of vulnerability, and perhaps one of those factors is the "popularity" of certain programs?

Viewed in that light, I think it's probable, that though Pale Moon may contain weaknesses that some other browsers do not, there is "some" (?) extent of safety in that it is not as high on the "hit (attack) list" of the bad-guys.

I'm playing devils advocate here - somewhat - but I also think that I'm glad that PM is not connected to "MS", and that with ANY enhancement or increase in speed, I feel (I think/Hope) that I limit my exposure to risks in that way ... less time on the net to get things done is less opportunity for bad things to happen (or am I waaaay off here, please?).

Again, I am ALWAYS happy to be corrected in all matters "tech", as I am DEFINITELY bringing up the rear on knowledge, understanding, and skill around here - so please don't hesitate to give me both barrels!

    Thanks again and in advance,
    g...

Pale moon browser is quite fast then FF. I can tell it straight away but then again the new opera browser 10.70 is also faster than FF and so is Google Chrome 7.

But I really like pale moon browser as the add-ons work on it.

Made me change my browser again. But I think i'm going to stick to pale moon browser

Thinking about changing browser myself, not because I don't like Firefox, but because Adobe Flash keeps crashing in Firefox.

I have one question about Palemoon: where is its cache? Does it use the same location as Firefox? (Meaning: will CCleaner implicitly also clean Palemoon's cache, or do I have to write a winapp2.ini extension for it?)

Re: ATTN: Firefox users! Want a faster browser?

There is no security factor involved with Palemoon's version 3.6.9 and with FF's 3.6.10 latest version. You can see that at FF's link below the reason why FF put out a fix in September.
The paragraph below is from Palemoon: www.palemoon.org
I always check FF's updates if there were any security fixes involved. If Palemoon is serious about its browser, I'm pretty sure that the author would update any security issues with Palemoon.

I've downloaded and un-installed 3 times. Won't work for me. I have a Pentium 4 processor and 1024mb of ram. Unable to get any of my bookmarks that took 3 years to compose. Without those that browser for me is a non subject.

I really don't know. I believe to have read on a website (that I forgot) that CCleaner cleans out PM's cache?

Of course, now I can't find the page back. :-o But found this:
on Softpedia's review of the latest version of CCleaner. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/CCleaner.shtml

Since you frequent CCleaner's forum and seem to know a lot about CCleaner, perhaps you will have the answer for us? :)

    Oh. Never mind then. :p

In that case I'll probably keep it just because I like completely bewildered expression people get when I let them borrow my computer for something, and they desperately try to locate the web browser, can't find anything they recognize, and are afraid to look stupid by asking. High comedy. LOL

Did you download the migration tool as well? Did you check out PM's website to check out what the problem could be and a possible fix? Be sure to read all the info. http://www.palemoon.org/

Actually, depending on which browser I use, they literally can't find it. Few of my non-MG friends would know what PaleMoon is. ;)

I had difficulties with the migration tool until I ran it as Administrator, and with Firefox and PaleMoon both closed, but that worked seamlessly. Win7, 64-bit.

Ah, Win 7, 64 bit, live and learn! When installing software (download to the desktop initially) , I NEVER have any browser or anything else running except of course the FW and AV. PM and the profile migration tool installed flawlessly without a hitch. Up and running in 2 minutes flat. Lucky me.

Ah - there is no privacy on the Internet... :cry

Anyway, found this existing topic on the Piriform forum http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=29944 confirming that Palemoon is supported.

Despite Palemoon using its own cache (%APPDATA%\Moonchild Productions\Pale Moon\Profiles), CCleaner will show the cleaning results under Mozilla Firefox.

Re: ATTN: Firefox users! Want a faster browser?

    I found this interesting:

In Firefox, if I have been web surfing and leave the browser open when I close the lid on my laptop (= hibernation), it takes a disturbingly long time for the browser to respond to me when I open the laptop lid and expect things to wake up and obey me again. In PaleMoon, that part is hassle-free. :)

Yes, my pic in my previous post shows that CCleaner puts/cleans Palemoon's internet cache under Mozilla Firefox. :)

2 good questions. I've been checking http://www.palemoon.org/start/ and so far no security update yet. As for SpywareBlaster, it just puts in blacklisted cookies or something like that in Firefox but I don't have the answer if PaleMoon is covered as well due to FF cookie coverage by SB.

Thanks oma for the info about CCleaner. I just started a new thread about CCleaner working with Palemoon (here), but I didn't check this thread first. :-o OOOOPS! LOL

I may be crazy, but it seems that if I try to manually launch a screen saver with PaleMoon running (even if it's minimized), the screen saver opens for about a second, then closes. Weird. I don't use a screen saver full time- I have some custom ones that I use occasionally and I launch 'em manually by double-clicking on the .SCR file, but they don't seem to work with PMoon running.
    :confused

EDIT - nevermind about the screen saver comment - they're working now.... weird.... they didn't work last night with PMoon running.... weird.....

Re: ATTN: Firefox users! Want a faster browser?

I think Spyware Blaster will work with PaleMoon: if you copied your FF profile over to PM, I think the blacklist is in that profile, therefore 'merging' with PM. But once you update Spyware Blaster, the new updates probably won't be added to the PM profile.

This is just a theory - since the PaleMoon web site does not appear to have forums, it's kind of hard to get a direct answer on this. However, Javacool (the folks behind Spyware Blaster) have a forum (here), and I think I'll post over there and see what happens.... I use Spyware Blaster myself so this is a REALLY good question!

EDIT - it looks like someone already started a thread in Javacool forums about PaleMoon and Spyware Blaster. Check it out: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=285028
No replies on it yet, but maybe if we all jump on it, they'll be "forced" to give us an answer! LOL

    That someone was me. LOL

Yes, I did use the migration tool to copy FF's info to PM. However, if CCleaner picks up PM's cache or whatever, doesn't mean that SpywareBlaster will do the same although we hope so eh? Thing is I haven't checked yet where SB's blacklist for FF is.

Thanks dlb!! Have been waiting now for a couple of days and no answer yet.

Thought about contacting PM's author but I figure that perhaps he wouldn't know enough about SpywareBlaster. Hope your theory pans out. :)

This browser works well on my ageing laptop but I hope the authors are going to make a UK English dictionary available. At present US English is the only option.

Re: ATTN: Firefox users! Want a faster browser?

Well, it shouldn't be like this, and hopefully it won't stay this way, but the workaround for anyone who wants a spell checker for a language other than US English is to install that language in Firefox first and then to re-run the migration tool.

Thanks but no thanks, Firefox is constantly updated with fixes for security and speed and I highly doubt the security of a new browser as well as how often it'll get updated.

As I recall, I think this feature is NOT available in Firefox but it is in Palemoon:

    from Palemoon FAQ:
This feature Can be set up in Opera as follows:

    Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Tabs
click Open new tab next to active

What about a Follower Tab as in Opera?

Does FF / PM have that yet, maybe via an addon?

  46. mjnc

    mjnc MajorGeek

Re: ATTN: Firefox users! Want a faster browser?

Follower Tab is not an Option setting.
You create a follower tab by right clicking on a (focused) tab and selecting that option.
If 'open new tab next to active' has been set ON, then the Follower Tab will open next to the focused tab and any link clicked in the focused tab will open in the Follower Tab.

Regardless of how many links you click in that tab, it will always open in the follower tab.
    I think that's a great feature.

I have searched but have not yet found an addon for Firefox that does that.

Yes, you're right about the Opera behavior.
That's why Firefox has been confusing to me in that respect since I generally use Opera.

Re: ATTN: Firefox users! Want a faster browser?

You are correct. I originally thought CCleaner was picking up PM as Firefox, but it isn't. I have a thread about this at this link. CCleaner isn't clearing out anything else from PaleMoon as it did with Firefox (temp files, caches, etc). I have it configured to get rid of most of this stuff when the browser is closed, but it would be nice if CCleaner picked up the rest of the garbage and disposed of it.

Wow!! They just had v3.6.11 a few days ago... I think maybe their user base is MUCH larger than it was a month or two ago, so they're (hopefully) listening to people's comments and implementing them. However, after installing the 3.6.11 update, I get occasional "script is not responding" errors (mainly at Newegg :confused ) that I never got before I did the update. Maybe 3.6.12 addresses this issue..... I'll install in a few minutes and see what happens!

3.6.12 update is a critical security update. That's probably why it was followed up so fast since FF released one just a few days ago.

Don't know why you've got the errors coming up. Did you try FF to see if same happens? If so then probably a visit to the FF forum would be worthwhile.
