    Hey Majors,

I'm missing drivers mentioned in title and the everest report is attached. Thanks in advance for all the help, it seems that maybe drivers weren't meant to support XP on this machine :(

    HI

Biostar actually say yes that board has support for XP, however they dont supply any drivers on their website for the motherboard or so I thought, so do you have the driver supplied disk still?

But a little digging and these should be for your motherboard in what Everest shows as the P4M890-M7 http://www.biostar-usa.com/mbdownloads.asp?model=P4M890-M7 PCI-E

Need to istall the Chipset driver first then reboot and install the Audio and Video.

    "Model P4M890-M7 Not Found!
Chances are this motherboard is a legacy product. We will gradually add support information for legacy products back to the web site. Meanwhile please contact Technical Support if you need help for legacy products.
    "
Is what that link gives me...maybe you copied the wrong one? It will only send me to technical support... And no I don't have any disks for this comp. It's a bit frustrating because the computer also freezes up at times and the cpu fan never stops spinning even when the computer isn't in use...is that normal? I thought it turns itself off after boot up and then kicks in again when in extensive cpu usage?

Hey Halo thanks for the help. Everything but the audio installed smoothly, I got an error (refer to attached pic) and I'm wondering if I should continue with the installation? :confused

It's the last thing left to install to make this baby run factory smooth :cool

Edit: Also solved the cpu fan problem...whoever dealt with this pc before left the fan on "Always On" in the cmos/bios settings so I changed it to "Smart Lvl 2". Thanks again for all the advice

    Hi Madpuss

Yes continue with the install as all that is, is that that driver didnt pass through Microsofts WHQL labs who sign drivers off, I get that all the time with the latest Nvidia Graphics drivers when I install them.

    Good stuff on the CPU.

    Hi

In device manager what yellow ! marks do you have, please name them all even the audio one, and the audio one what error code is it showing (likely code 10)?

Give this updated generic driver for the ALC655 Audio chip a go http://majorgeeks.com/Realtek_AC97_Drivers_d4400.html

Looks like luck isn't on my side, that driver didn't work either :mad
Attached screenie of what Device Manager says it's missing and also here's the Device Instance ID if that helps any:

    HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0662&SUBSYS_15650000&REV_1001\4&2F11E50A&0&0001

And this is in the Everest Report

    Multimedia:
Audio Adapter VIA VT8237A/8251 High Definition Audio Controller

I've tried using drivers for XP for the VT8237A also with no success...

    Eureka!!

Finally hit the mark Halo :cool

    This one works

    http://www.softexia.com/drivers/47-realtek-high-definition-audio-driver.html

So maybe someone else can use this thread if they've downgraded from vista to xp on a compaq presario sr5250nx desktop.

Now all I have to do is figure out why the CPU fan refuses to shut off even though I've set it manually to shut off at a certain temperature, tried switching fans with a nearby comp and I've even changed between smart Lvl1, 2 and 3 settings and still no luck. I can't pinpoint the exact cause as to why the fan won't shut down :confused

Cool stuff Madpuss, good find on the driver and cheers for posting your fix, indeed it may help someone else.

On your CPU fan, check the BIOS for a CPU fan control setting as I know in my BIOS I can adjust the setting of the hardware monitor to 3 settings and the very quiet setting is quiet until you do intensive work on the PC and it slowly gains speed to cool the CPU as required.
