Cool Edit Pro. for editing audio is excellent. For video... I use some different programs depending on what I need to do. Adobe Premier 6.5 is good like people have been saying. I also use a program called TMPGEnc.

I was thinking that virtualdub would win, but looks like adobe premier wins.
What about the audio editor ? people talk about cool edit and sonic foundry, or should i use other ?

Cool Edit has everything I need. Never tried anything else because it is such a good program. Expensive though.

You can do just about anything with Cool Edit.:)

Myself, i have both, them use it a lot for recording my band and stuff..

Personally i would say that cool edit is a nice program, and is nice to use, BUT lacks stability handling large files... (for example just recently ive been recording HHG2TG to digital format, and a half an hour long sound file working on wasnt so nice, i.e. the plugins took ages to load up, and saving it was a nightmare)

Soundforge has better quality plugins, IMO, for example Wave Hammer is a very very very very useful tool! Sound Forge is closer to Pro tools than anything (that being the best there is) and the user inferface is pretty good, and also very cool because it intergrates with ACID Pro 4, which is a loop/sequencing program which i use. The CD creating feature is fantastic, just set up your markers, allocate the ident details and youre off..

But the redeeming point for Cool Edit Pro is that the features are more advanced and give you a larger scope for creativity, such as the dynamic EQ, hiss reduction (you gotta be a bit careful with that one.... i got some really odd results with it before) and noise reduction... all the other stuff..

to conclude : Cool Edit is more creativley pointed, great to handle, has all the features you might need for a multi track recording program, or waveform editor.. but in my eyes sound forge is a more professional program, with professional plugins.

If it helps any, for outside recording my step dads sound company uses sound forge :)

P.S personally i use both, since i like the features of both :D

am i just an idiot or is there no way to add differnet layers to a track in sound forge? whenever i try to put the recorded voice in to the music, it wants to mix it, and that's a permanet thing... is there a way to add layers? i'm a complete n00b to the program, i just got it recently

there certainly is in Cool Edit (multitrack mode) but i would imagine they want you to use acid for sequencing things...

A friend of mine has Cakewalk to edit his band. It's a VERY cool program (not cheap though) and he has an older version. You can do almost anything to audio with it.

heh, like i said earlier, i have pretty much all the sound programs..
Cakewalk is rather cool for sequencing but personally i think it lacks features unless you install some of your own plugins (some of which come with soundforge and cooledit)

The other great thing about cakewalk is that you can do midi sequencing with it too. Its closer to pro tools than anything else mentioned here.

But its more of a sequencer than a wave editor.

say if you have other opinion

I am not going to download adobe premiere 6.5 now, because it looks like adobe premiere 7.0 is comming out, does anyone know anything ? what about a professional version, some websites talk about that.
