Audio Driver ?

I'm new to forums. My situation: reformatted HD, installed Win98SE, could not i.d. the multimedia audio controller, don't know what driver I need. Upgraded to XP SP2, fixed some other harware install problems, but still can't determine what audio driver I need. Can you help?

 

When you go into Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices> click the tab labeled "Audio" what does it say? is the area greyed out? also what type of computer do you have?

My sound playback says "Sound Max HD Audio"

Audio window is greyed out, because no multimedia audio controller driver was installed. Computer is generic, 1.15 Ghz, WinXP SP2, everything looks good in device manager, except for other devices: multimedia audio controller.
Don't know how to identify which one is onboard, no separate sound card.
Downloaded Version Tracker hoping it would i.d. the onboard hardware and direct me to the correct driver, but no luck.
