First off by saying - sorry

I've looked through the threads before posting this, and I'm lost. It's one of those problems, someone will go (that old thing tich). But alas, for me it's tougher than taking on Einstein at maths (now if it was scrabble... different story)

I was flicking through the internet and then the audio went dead on my computer.

    I've done the following things:
Checked that nothing was set to mute and that they were plugged in.
    On devices/ hardware, there's a yellow circle with a ! around it beside Communication port (COM1) -
So I figure this must have something to do with it - as the words communicate's in it. :cool I felt clever - but

I've no idea. I downloaded Everest and ran a report as it was in one of the other threads - but as it's massive, didn't want to upload it a a 586 page word doc.

So I was wondering what do I do from there? Basically, the underbelly of the computer beast is a glorious mystery and I didn't want to tickle any bits that would get it annoyed.

Thanks for your help and again if this is out of place, sorry.

    Ryan

    Hi Ryan

No applogies needed, if the infos not here in any threads then its not here, Audio issues at times are unique so best to start from the beginning always IMO.

With Everest if a full report is as it is long then get the Summary Report as it will have enough info to see what hardware your PC has, then attach that one. So click report > report Wizzard > System Summary only > Plain Text then with the resulting text report attach that.

Also let us know what Make your PC is if its an OEM ( aka DELL, Sony, HP etc ) also model varient as they will have the specific drivers for your PC on their support site.

    Hi,

It's a Dell, pentium, dimension 2400 (well, I've no idea if that's what it is but that s what on the side).

:major -just wanted to use this as it's a brilliant smiley

Is there any other information you require?

Oh, I also wanted to say a big thank you for a number of things.

    1) I had some weird pop up when i went on the internet, saying do you want to download you are infected (the comptuer, not me) blah de blah download this now -and thanks to Major geeks - And the joy of superanti-spyware - the things away.

Now all things netty and compy confuse me slightly- so it was a joy to find a simple follow instructions on how to get the nasty's away from your computer.

    2) And thanks for taking the time to reply. There is a massive sense of relief, that there is an answer to this problem, irrespective if its beyond me.

    So thanks again,

    Ryan

    Hi Ryan

Thanks for the nice words abut this forum, much apprieciated and the guys in malware ( especially Chaslang ) work wonders and the guides are adapted all the tim to make them easy for all to follow.

Well on to your issue, COM1 is generally a Communications Port and deals with some printers, modems, mice and more so game controllers that are connected to a serial port in the back of the PC. Dont think this is your issue, just think your Audio driver is corrupted.

So here is the page at Dell for the drivers for your PC http://support.dell.com/support/dow...M_PNT_P4_CEL_2400&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

What I would do is to install the Chipset driver first as this allow many of th ebuilt in hardware devices to be easily recognised by Windows, then install the audio driver, the one you need ( going by your Everest report ) is the Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated Audio one.

I'm now sitting listening to the joyous sounds on the computer,

    many thanks,

    You're brilliant.

That was something that would have taken me years to know, in fact it's something Id never be able to understand.

    So thanks again.
