Hi, i have xp sp2 home that is infected with the aurora spyware. I went and downloaded their uninstaller,
    (www.mypctuneup.com/aurora)

it didn't work ofcourse, they even had live help to talk to me! anybody know how to get rid of this thing? I've run adaware, spybot, in safe mode, it doesn't seem to find it. it keeps popping up in regcleaner however as being installed. any ideas outside of reinstalling windows? I noticed my windows "search companion" is missing a file now too, so i can't even search my pc files!!! I went to windows site and downloaded the search hotfix...it however will not work with sp2 !! grrrrrrrrhttp://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

That uninstaller has work at least a dozen time or more for us. I wonder if you have some other issues causing removal problems. Please follow the steps below so we can see what is going on.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus RemovalMake sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

well, i think i got rid of aurora, i found a dill that file that would not uninstall, i deleted it. BUT my windows search still says,

"A File That Is Required to Run Search Companion Cannot Be Found you may have to run setup"

and windows update, yahoo msgr, system restore, system info. don't work. I ran %systemroot%\inf and tried to install Srchasst.inf again, it copied the missing dlls from my original xp ver 1 cd , still no luck.
is there a windows repair tool i should run?

Please complete the steps I gave you in my first message so we can determine the state of your PC.

If you are just looking for a repair for Win XP you should ask questions like that in the Software Forum. Booting from the WinXP CD does offer a repair option but I believe that can also bring return your PC to an old revision level or will not work for cases where you are already running XP SP2 and you boot CD is just XP or XP SP1.
