1-0 England vs paraguay the greatest goal I have ever seen, the skill with which beckham bounced the ball off Carlos Gamarra's head was awe inspiring :D

I'm rooting for the aussies, unless you play us :)

Why a draw? I'm hoping for a win.

No team is invincible, and that especially applies to football.

It could have been a disaster, the only goal Japan scored was due to a refereeing error.

I really hope this thread isn't a bad omen.

I'd just about given up on them. Then the Aussies scored three goals in the last six minutes. I.I.R.C., LoL! Made for an exciting finish.

Grats to the Aussies, you all earned that win. Incredible way to finish that match.

I'm also wondering about Brazil this year. I feel like they could slip up this time.

I think all we need is 1 point from the next 2 games to qualify for round 2. Naturally, I am hoping for 2 wins. I think we can beat Croatia. I hope the 4 yellow cards we got in the game against Japan don't ruin our chances. Bazza

Brazil got the win 1-0 against Croatia. Aussies versus Brazil on Monday and then we meet Croatia. Croatia might be tougher than Aussies are giving them credit for. Bazza

Croatia looked like a good tough battling team, especially toward the end of the game, their fitness looked much better than Brazil's,Brazil has the brief touches of genius though the help them get through

If think if Brazil had to play croatia again on Monday I think it could go either way, prediction for your game 2-1 to Australia :)

Croatia are no pushover of a team, a fair few of their team play in either the Italian SerieA or the German Bundesliga for top teams and the rest are in European well known teams.

But will be a great match I feel... just hope the ball runs the Aussie way :)

No doubt, they're a good team and they put up a good fight against Brazil.

I've got a gut feeling that we peaked too early.

Most of the good teams, and those that go on to win, don't usually peak so early, and "save" their best till when it's really needed.

    Re: Aussies 2-2 Croatia

What a game. Aussies came from behind twice to draw. Thank God they didnt have to win to qualify for the next round. Puts paid to the USA insult that the Aussies were only there to make up the numbers . Aussies in. USA out. What a shame that the Aussies did not meet the Yanks somewhere along the line. Would have been interesting.

The referee was crap missing vital points on both sides. Aussies offside goal. Croatian handballs. He gave 3 yellow cards to a Croatian player in 90 minutes and he still wasn't sent off.

Anyway it's history now, bring on Italy. From a very sleepy Bazza

At least the ref wasn't trigger happy like the German ref in the Brazil game, even though he stuffed up and gave a Croatian player 3 yellow cards.

What I don't get is why they don't use video refs in soccer.

I understand it would slow the game, but it would take a lot of the errors out too.

Cricket, Rugby Union and other leagues use it effectively, why not soccer?

    Go Socceroos!

If they used a video ref in soccer it would turn it into a 4 hour game like American football (gridiron).

But seriously it should be used for infringements in the 10 yard boxes`at least, IMHO.

They don't have to use it for every penalty, just the iffy ones.

Works OK, and doesn't take long, in other games.

With todays technology, it would only take seconds.

I get really peeved when refs make blatant errors in such an unforgiving game.

I'm not a huge soccer fan (except when the Aussies win), but another thing I don't like is how the players think they are rehearsing for an academy award.

They dive as if shot by a sniper, then as soon as the penalty is awarded, they are miraculously healed.

I know other games do it, but not to that level.

Now there's a sissy game if I ever saw one. :p

Gotta disgree, two 300 pound men running at each other full pelt  without pads the heat created by the collision would fuse their bodies together :)

Any kind of competition can be enjoyable to watch, the key is having someone to root for and knowing a little background of the players,if you dont know and dont care you dont watch

My favourite sport is basketball,as they go that probably the the sissiest sport of them all but one of the only one I can watch without wanted any particular team to win,I just like watching them play the game :)

EDIT urgh some of the divers in football ? they should get yellow cards as the rules go now only guy being fouled can get carded this has gotta change or it will be more of the same

GridIron players are no bigger than some Rugby Union and Rugby League forwards, and they don't wear helmets and padding, and do a LOT more tackling.......

    Now there's another boring so-called sport. :p

Why don't they just start them both on a hundred points each, and play for 5 minutes. The result would be the same.

The English ref Pole was a disgrace... no doubt the next football match he refs will be sunday league pub football, how the hell can you give a player 3 yellows and not know!!! they have a 3rd ref who talks to them in that ear peice! I agree video should not show the game too much as it doesnt in Cricket or Rugby ( no armour all out war )... but will remove many silly ref mistakes.

Have to say the japan team did themselfs proud in the 1st half and we just outclassed in the 2nd.

GO Socceroos.. Congrats on getting through guys!

Totally understand,me and my brother used to drive my parents crazy watching NBA games,we didnt have sky back then so any we could persaude friends to tape, usually we watched the same games over,my favourite 'probably still to this day' was one of Jordans first games back 55 points against Newyork,I obviously cant make you understand but it was one of the greatest times of my life and I was captain of the basketball team back then:) ,unless you know the in's and out of the game its hard to tell whats a good move or play and even harder to appriciate it

Two vids to watch before you dismiss basketball,Michael Jordan Air Time and Michael Jordan come fly with me,buy them you'll be an instant basketball fan, went a little further for me it became my life,I'm happy now just to catch a regular season game, dont play anymore either

May seem a little over the top i just cant emphasize how important basketball was during my teen years,I love everything about the game, there wasnt a 'hoop dream' I hadnt had

American football seems to me like 5mins of setting everybody up then a 10 second play,I cant imagine anyone on the field has any aerobic fitness

Halo agree with everything in your post lol :)

The best final I could imagine would be between England and Australia. (not likely)

Both countries have history, and are fiercely competitive.

They also play the game in a similar way, and don't take dives as often as others, especially the South American teams.

If I had to chose another team apart from Australia to win, it would be Blighty.

Not only that, but you guys don't win much in sport. :D :p

Same for me with Australia were very similar socially and culturally australia and England,I agree we dont seem to do that great in sport especially when you consider how rich our country is,but I guess you dont get as rich as us by investing in youth sport programs:rolleyes: :) ,theres also the pressure of our fans,we have the best international fans in the world in football they can fire you up ready to play the game or exert a huge weight of pressure, again this is down to us being able to afford to go abroad for a few weeks and support the team some poorer countries fans cant afford to,yet I'l bet thier passion for the team especially the south American teams is just as high as our fans:confused:

At least Australia and Blighty can play more than one sport successfully.

Only thing a team like Brazil can do is play soccer. Big deal.

Any country that played just one sport would be good too.

Let's see them play Rugby or Cricket. :)

There's more to life than sport, but Australia can hold it's head high on both counts.

For a country of only 20 million, it's amazing how many sporting events we win.

God bless Australia, and go Socceroos!

Losing lots of sleep, here in OZ, watching the soccer World cup. Matches start being broadcast after midnight and continue with a new match every 2 hours or so.

Now the top 16 second round is on. Sweden and Mexico both lost their games, and can pack their bags.

Aussies v Italy Wednesday morning, our time, I think. Will check the TV guide today. Won't miss that.

Go Aussies. They have gone further than ever before reaching the second round, at least.

Aussies play Italy at 1 am on Tuesday 27 June, morning. (Australian East coast time).
I think we wll give them a fright, probably a win, maybe. ;) :D

What a goal from Beckham in England v Ecuador. He was stuffed and looked very de-hydrated most of the match.

Germany, Argentina, England and Portugal through to the last 8, so far. Bazza

Yeah, all their games were gutsy, and they never gave up.

Their coach (Guus Hiddinck) would have to be one of, if not, the best coach available.

Last World Cup he did wonders with the South Korean team, and his record is very impressive.

He's now on contract to coach Russia.

Anyway, let's hear it for Blighty, I want them to win!

Once again the referee got it wrong (according to the experts).
The Aussie player (Neill) fell over and was on the ground.
The Italian tripped over him and put on a great act for a penalty, in the last 30 seconds. I, for one, was astonished that there was 3 minutes of extra time, anyhow, as I thought it should be less than that.
Italy scored from the penalty spot and the Aussie dream is over.:( :p

Well done, guys, you did us proud. No Kewell, though.:p

Just now, 6:41 am (Tuesday OZ time), Ukraine and the Swiss are 0-0 and around 5 minutes to full time (plus any stoppage time).

Looking forward to Brazil v Ghana and Spain v France over the next 24 hours.
