I dunno. I think Brazil has been lazing along waiting for a real challenge. They've looked sloppy, but not lacking. Of course, argentina has produced a whole set of foot acrobats.

Now we'll get a couple of days normal sleep until the quarter finals start.

The Poms versus Brazil looks a definite possibilty in the semi-finals.

Thierry Henry's fake face smack stunt was laughable,I'd be asolutely ashamed for stunt like this yet he holds his head high and seems proud ,it also proved the turning point of the match,cheating does pay

Opinions, Gentlemen. Opinions. No one can judge the teams who played in the Portugal/Holland game. That was ice-hockey at its best. I agree that the French cheated and it upped their credibility to add a legit goal to the cheated one. But I haven't seen anything but good playing from Argentina so far, and Brazil seems to be either weak or lying in wait. Germany was unstoppable in their last game, but I don't know if they can psychologically stand the idea of winning. Look what happened in the last two world wars?

I have to tell this funny story from the 1990s. In Berlin there's a victory column with a big gold angel on top of it in the middle of the Tiergarten (like Central Park in NYC). It's called the Siegesäule or Victory Column. I used to always refer to it as the angel, and my husband who's German corrected me and told me it was not really an angel, but some goddess of victory. I said, oh, what for? And he said ... well, not anything from this century.

Anyone watching germany vs argentina,Awsome game on paper but pretty lackuster so far at half time,I see it going to penalties on 1-0 to either team from a setpeice both of the defense are awsome only two shots on goal after 45 mins

Home team germany I'm rooting for it'd be great for them to win the cup at home,a few Argintine glass legs episodes and some complaints from the Germans at how easy they are falling,I just hate that kind of football hopefully the ref will start handing out yellows for cheating soon keep a lid on it,if not I definitely see Argininia getting a penalty from a dive to take the game

GERMANY!GERMANY!GERMANY! justice what perfect finish,one of Argentine players started a fight at the after they lost,I'm not sure how it started I heard the commentators say a Germay player hit the floor out of nowhere I they didnt show any footage,anyone know what happened,you see Abri,looked like a case of sour grapes,if so the right team definitely did win

 

Fell asleep watching Germany v Argentina near the end of the first 90 minutes, 2.30am Australian time.
Obviously Germany won.

Now watching Italy v Ukraine, started 5am Australian time. Score 1 all, at present.
Italy certainly started off the more energy than when they played Australia. Bazza

The café exploded when Germany won. I only saw the fight. I don't know how it started. But I knew this was going to be a "fight to the death" so to speak, as both teams had so many emotionally laden reasons for wanting to win. At the beginning of the game, I predicted it would go to 11 meter, because I thought that is where Germany thought they could win, but I did not expect them each to get a goal. It was an incredible game!!! The main street of Berlin was immediately blocked off and flooded with humans waving flags. There hasn't been anything like that here since the Wall opened. It was great!!!

How could the Germans lose.....they would of whooped Italy in penalties but hey, what a twist, so now we wait to see if the French or the Portuguese will advance. I got all bets on the French. Henry will score the winnin goal again.

All Aussie socceroo supporters are hoping Italy doesn'r win because of the dive to defeat the Aussies. The Italians have gone onto improve in every match since then, so it should be a good match.

Italy beats France 5-2 penalty shootout, was hopin France would win, but sometimes its just fate that decides the winner, but overall its been one hell of a World Cup. If only Zidane hadnt headbutt that guy in the chest and expulsed himself, things might have ended up a lil different. Wonder what made Zidane get that pissed off that he ended up smashing that guys chest. Also why did France take out Henry Thierry and Ribery, 2 of their best players. It weaken the French offensive and therefore influenced that match.

 

As I see this is Zidanes last game ever, I wonder if he wanted to leave his everlasting trademark on that dudes chest

 

The local channel sports dork here starts the story with the headline, "France Surrenders World Cup To Italians". Guess he got his war history confused with his soccer history.

 

Exactly what I thought,he wasnt sure what went on, asked his lineman what happened then booked him,if only a few more decisions were approached like there would be more justice served instead of the refs make a quick decision and its instantly written in stone and uncontestable,why cant the ref call a free kick, his linesman with a better view say otherwise and the decision reversed

Hopefully soon the refs will have the benifit of replays,it wouldnt even slow play down as is feared by FIFA "some of the most corrupt a-holes in the world " the ref would simply get a message from some officials who witnessed the replay through his two way headset

I don't think there is any excusing it - I can only guess as to what the pressure must be like on those players in a final like that...but Zidane, with his last game and a lot of the world watching???

I don't really follow league football, never have, but I love the international tournaments every couple of years. As such I frequently ask my footie-loving mates questions like 'why don't they use video referreeing, like in Rugby for instance?' and they always say things like: its part of the game that a referee is watching and makes decision based on what he sees, and the fallibility of it is just 'part of the fun'.
Nowadays I think theres too much riding on professional sports. The game shouldn't be based on what one man 'thinks' he saw, or thinks happened. It should be based on what happened. With all the technology we have now how can that be so hard?
