Well, it should seem obvious, but since other sites want to make buttons because they might have scanned your program with VirusTotal, I think it's time we made a similar button and let people know who the real deal is. A website with 2 geeks in their basement who reject the majority of all submissions and don't take days off. 10+ years of REALLY testing programs. Yeah, BEFORE malware. Not some employee who could care less, not some cheap labor in Romania and not some intern. Real geeks who really care. Quality over quantity.

Link to your listing or even to http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=21 Whatever you want. Friends, please help spread the word! Let's get these buttons out there! Thanks!

I have placed one on my personal FaceBook page, and one on a separate FaceBook page ("Tech-Glog") that I'm trying to put-together (https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=119021364807153&ref=ts) ... and yes, I STOLE the pic/avatar I have there from someone here (long ago...) ha. (Hope I haven't infringed on anything/broken any rules, etc.?)

I have promoted MG's there several times in recent weeks.

Yes, me too. They are always very helpful, better than any other I had previously asked for hlp. Don't get treated like an idiot either, on here. :)

We can talk down to you if you like so you feel like your at a typical forum? Let me know, I am really good at it too! ;)

Seriously, thanks. Its a labor of love and being different takes a lot of great volunteer moderators who make it happen. I could never do it alone. It would be easier to give up, but it's not in our nature.

On other places I frequent I send people here or in real life. And if they ask how they can pay or whatever I simply say you guys have clothing and other items for cheap prices, plus a store on MG site.

My website should be up soon and I will be back to grab buttons.

I won't go anywhere else for computer help but Major Geeks, even though there are times when I ask stupid questions.

Hi, not sure if this is the best place to ask this question, but one thing I've always wondered about when it comes to "tested" applications is:

Are applications tested for "phone home" behavior?

The reason I ask is that I recently saw an article in the Wall St. Journal that reported numerous (over 50) rouge cellphone apps that secretly transmited data without the user's consent or knowledge. Toward the end of the article it was stated that the behavior was similar to "so many" shareware/freeware applications for computers that transmit data without approval, and that said applications "easily bypass software firewalls".

I don't know where to look to see if such things are happening, except using Task Manager. But when I do look with Task Manager, I see that there is almost always some degree of traffic flowing. I'm told this is not unusual.

Thanks in advance for any advice/information you can offer.

Cellphone apps are a bit different, we would like to venture into that someday, especially Android but for now the 2 of us are working more 7 days a week and are doing all we can.

As for testing, this goes back before malware. More info than you wanted, but we take pride as one of the few websites out there that MEAN what we say when we say we test it. I do quite a few things, depending on the application, for example:

    - Google. Who lists this program? Any reputation issues? Google can often tell you all you want to know.

    - Scan. Because one anti-virus isn't a guarantee I use VirusTotal online to scan the application.

    - Install it. Any problems? Does it do what it says? Is the pricing fair?

    We reject about 95%.

Anyway, when they reference shareware\freeware they are being misleading a bit. See, if you install a toolbar which is common, these things send data back and forth and as you know many large toolbars are safe. Same with the program updating. Rarely is it done without approval, had the end user READ the EULA (end user license agreement) so this wording stinks of ascare tactic. This reminds me of the cookie debate. The job of a cookie is to save information for you and use it when you need it to simplify your web browsing mostly for advertisements or for sites you log in to. It has taken years with us complaining that cookies are not bad and now most anti-spyware apps finally stopped calling cookies bad. They still remove them as part of a drive cleaning process.

Way too much information, hope I answered it. I assume cell phone apps do indeed work exactly like I described above. I think the EULA for Itunes is something like 84 pages long, it's ridiculous, you might have given away your first born by agreeing, who can read or make sense of an 84 page EULA. A good attorney needs to make a basic EULA boilerplate and narrow it to a couple of pages, it's gotten silly :)

Thanks for your detailed response, I appreciate your time and advice.

I enjoyed your comments about the State of the EULA......it reminded me of this site that, among other things, states "we reserve the right to tell your mother"
That "Terms and Conditions" page is at
    http://shroudmail.com/terms.html

Sadly, since wikileaks gained notoriety in the media, shroudmail operations appear to be shut down.

Thanks again for your time and explanation.

why is anyone welcome to use them? Surely something like this loses meaning if you're not carefully controlling who is allowed to display your logo and approval ?

Have been a supporter of the MG forums for over a year now. Have been helped many times and have done some helping as well. I'm a Linux user so I spend a lot of time in the Linux forums trying to offer help when I can. It was actually an MG forum user that helped me get started in Linux.
MG is and continues to be the BEST online source for software and support.

My hats off to all of you who put so much of their blood sweat and tears to making this site what it is. MG ROCKS!!!!! :dood

    All the best,

    Ian

Tim thanks for writing that! I feel stupid at times asking questions my level of knowledge is not where near most of you. I have a few questions now and was concerned about asking them. Now I won't feel embarrassed to ask.
    Thanks again!

The name "Majorgeeks" can be misleading and intimidating. Yes, we can get frustrated with people sometimes but you will never learn if you are afraid to ask. Most importantly, we are lucky this forum is so popular, often you can search our forums and might find your question already answered! We have a small group of dedicated geeks who literally can't wait to answer questions.
