I am not sure if this is the correct forum, but I can't auto-update any of my security programs (Adaware, Spybot, SpywareBlaster). I can manually update AdAware and Spybot, but can't find update for spywareBlaster. I have downloaded the programs several times but still the same problem. I used to be able to. I tried looking for similar threads but I couldn't understand the few that were there. My last logs were declared malware free (yea) b/c of the excellent help received here (I am not worthy). Any comments?

As far as I know unless you have the retail paid versions of those 3 you do not get Auto Updates, you need to manually update them all, especially Ad-Aware and Spywareblaster ( spybot I dont use but I can remember it being manual )

Spywareblaster you just if memory serves, without re-looking you would just need to donate a few $s to get access to autoupdates.

the manual updater link for Spywareblaster is located once you run the application is located on the Protection Tab and under the heading Quick Tasks.. just click Download Latest Protection Updates... once downloaded click Enable all

Ah, I think I mispoke. My issue is that I open the program, push on the update button, and get various replies, e.g., "error retrieving update" or "process failed" or "die carbon-based entity." I used to be able to do this but now cannot. It is not the end of the world because I can go to the sites and download the definitions that way (except SpywareBlaster b/c the link to which you referred doesn't work (see replies above) and when I go to the SPWRBLSTR site I can't find the definition files.

I read something about an update problem occurring b/c of a registry value that directs the attempt to update to a certain portal which directs the program to look for updates on my computer. It might have well been written in Sanskrit.

What version of SpywareBlaster are you running?

    Version 3.5.1

When I use the update button, the process doesn't work (same for adaware and spybot.)

Do you use a proxy server to get internet access? If so, you must setup the proxy server info in all three of these programs.

Yes, I am on a proxy. I could call IS but they tend to frown on non-approved, i.e., not loaded by them, applications. Think you could walk me through it?

You need to know what the proxy server settings are. I cannot give those to you. You should be able to see how they configured IE to work.

In IE, Click Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab, LAN Settings button. Now you should see a form with an area labeled Proxy server Click the Advanced button and the next form will show you how your proxy server is setup. See the Type for http: and write it down. Also write down the port that is used.

Once you have this info you will need to configure each of your programs to use the proxy and give it that info.

    The easiest one is SpywareBlaster.
    • Click Updates and then click the Options button
    • then select the Use the system connection/proxy settings You don't even have to enter the proxy/port info.
    For Spybot,
    • you must be in Advanced Mode. Click Mode, Advanced Mode
    • Then click Settings to expand the settings list
    • Under Settings you will find another sub catagory also named Settings. Select it.
    • In the right window pane scroll down to the Web update area and select Use proxy to connect to update server
    • In the next form enter the into the Host: field the info (URL or IP) of your proxy server.
    • In the Port field enter your Proxy Server port number
    • Click OK
Now go back ot the Spybot S&D selection and try your updates. After you update, don't forget to re-Immunize!!!!!

I'm going to let you do some work now that you have the idea. ;) See if you can figure out how to do Ad-Aware on your own. Consider it a learning experience/challenge. ;) If you cannot do it, let me know and I will help you. Hint: It is actually right in front of you when you click to update.

You mean open adaware, click on the webupdate icon, select configure and enter the address and port? I don't know, I'll try...

Seriously, I will do this first thing in am when I get to the office. Thank-you for your generous time and support. As always, I am not worthy...

I knew you could do it! ;)

You're welcome! I had some good friends years ago from Cutbank! Anywhere near you in that huge state? What was the temperature this morning?

Well, both spybot and adaware are working. for Spywareblaster 3.5.1, I selected the use internet/proxy settings and no go (message: Unable to establish connection, blah blah blah). I then selected the Use this proxy and put in the address:port like this: 10.10.11.254:9119 (these being the settings.) Still no go. Did I type in the address:port incorrectly? If all else fails is there a separate download for the update that I haven't found?

Cut Bank is about 6-7 hours NNW of Billings (close to Candian border). For Montana that is considered a long trip. It is somewhat warmer than usual today- 42 or so with high 50 or so. Billings is usually warmer than most of the state. It is in the "Banana Belt" of the Rockies

I'm happy to hear you go things updated. I don't know why SpywareBlaster is having a problem with your proxy setting. I have no problems with it when I use it via a proxy server.
