Autocomplete not saving passwords

    Greetings!

 I have tried for weeks to figure out why my Autocomplete is not
working on my work computer. I have Autocomplete turned on, and when I
view a web site that I must log into, it asks if I want to save the password,
I reply "yes", but it never, ever, ever actually saves the password. I am
running 98SE and IE 6.0, both with all current available updates.

I am beginning to wonder if one of my spyware-prevention programs are
keeping passwords from being saved, or if some other program is doing it.
Spybot and Ad-Aware cannot find any spyware in my system, and I am
    running AVG anti-virus software.

Microsoft has a couple pages that address this issue, but they relate to
XP, 2000, or some other operating system than 98SE.

    Thanks! Have a great day!

    Wally

The only program that I know of that deletes the autocomplete form history is CCleaner. I'm sure that there is much more software that does this, but I'm only aware of CCleaner doing that.

There have been reported problems with people running IE version 6.0 with Win98SE. IE 6.0 was mostly made for Windows 2000/XP machines, even though in theory, it should run on 95/98/ME machines. You may want to try using the "repair" option in Windows to uninstall/reinstall IE 6.0 to start with, allowing the full installation to finish properly. That could fix the problem.

Or, you could uninstall 6.0 and use version 5.5 instead.

    Good luck!

What do you see when you go to TOOLS | INTERNET OPTIONS | CONTENT | AUTO COMPLETE? Do you have a "prompt me to save passwords" check box?

Yes, the "prompt me to save passwords" box is checked, everything looks the
same as it does on other computers I use that do save passwords, it just
doesn't save them. I am starting to wonder about the CCleaner idea, I did
try CCleaner a few months ago. Is there any way to restore the "auto-
    complete form history"?

becuase CCleaner deletes it and im positive there is no restore function for the mentioned history, the only thing i am aware you can restore is the registry and thats only if you make a back up.

sorry if i was a little unclear what i was refering to :)

Wait a second. CCleaner is not supposed to remove the autocomplete form history tool, it just cleans the saved passwords. CCleaner absolutely should not break the functionality of the tool.

There is definitely something else going on here. If you are not currently using CCleaner to clean your autocomplete forum history, then something else is definitely wrong.

    Firefox FTW! :)

@VoiD - He hasn't used CCleaner in months so that wouldn't be the problem right now. ;)

Maybe I should clarify my problem a little more. I'm not really worried about
the passwords I lost, I can easily re-enter them. What I mind is the nuisance
of logging into websites over and over again, each time entering my user
name and password, while autocomplete each times promises to remember
my info but never does. It's almost sort of funny, every single time auto-
complete asks me if I want it to remember my passwords, every single time I
answer yes, and every single time it doesn't remember!!!

    Thanks!

lol i didnt say at any time that CCleaner is the problem

hmm after reading back i was thinking that he hasnt been saving passwords since he used CCleaner due to him saying:

"I am starting to wonder about the CCleaner idea, I did
try CCleaner a few months ago. Is there any way to restore the "auto-
    complete form history"?

and the fact he deleted the passwords was a bad idea.

    sorry if i misread this

    Delete your Temporary Internet Files

    and.......

Try turning AutoComplete off, restarting, turning it back on.

I delete my temporary internet every couple hours, using Disk Cleaner, and
I did try turning off autocomplete off, clearing all forms and passwords,
rebooting and then turning it back on. Didn't work.

Does anybody think it's possible for a spyware blocking program, such as
Spywareblaster or Spybot, to prevent the passwords from being saved?
It's almost as if Windows is doing everything it can, but some third-party
program is not allowing the passwords to be saved.

    Any more ideas?
