Automatic Updates Service

    I had just begun to edit the services on my computer when I found out that I can't even get into the Automatic Updates Service (to disable it). When clicking on properties I get the following error message: "Unable to open service Automatic Updates for reading on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied.".

    I go to Control Panel -> User Accounts and where it says what Account I logon with "Computer administrator".

    Are you on a network or is this stand alone PC? Is it XP Home or Pro?

    Easier option to disable Auto Updates is to Right Click My Computer > properties > Automatic Updates and check the "Turn off Automatic Updates" option... generally the one I use as I prefer to goto MU/WU manually.

    I have XP Pro. I've already tried the CastleCops and always have the Automatic Updates turned off that way. I am connected to a router, not sure if that is a network or not (the computers in the house don't interact with each other in any way). I just found out that turning off the Automatic Updates service causes Microsoft Update to not work but I still need to be able to disable it for other hardware profiles (for Capturing Music Videos and Ripping CDs).
