when i first got my laptop, (windows7 pre-installed) i used the readyboost with a 8gig flashdrive with the auto run popup when inserted into the usb-port. but now when i insert the flash drive, there is no auto run popup, and when i go to device properties, there isnt a readyboost tab anymore?

i chated with a micro$oft techy and they told me to edit autorun options, and to reset defaults( i did with no success ) makesure the box is checked for autorun promt( it was ) and something with the cmd prompt that didnt work eather. is there any one that can help me fix this autorun readyboost problem that would be great! =)

    Hi

Do you have any files/data on the 8GB flashdrive? if so move it to a HDD or another flashdrive, and/or if you dont have any files/data on the flashdrive then in both scenarios format the flashdrive again to Fat32 and unplug and reboot, then plug in the flashdrive again to see if that works.

Next option is when formatted to open Device Manager and drill down to Universal Serial Bus Controllers and open the branch (the +) then pop in the USB pen and look for the additional Mass Storage device that likely will popup and then right click and uninstall it, this removes the USB driver for that specific device, then unplug the USB flashdrive and then re-plug it in and the device driver should load again.

i will give the 2nd option a go real quick, and no, there isn't anything on the card. i formatted it to fat32 and theres another format i tried as well. i cant remember off hand what it was. will repost in a bit to say the results.

    Hi

Likely NTFS was the other format, also try plain old FAT as well.

I checked mine out, on different usb sticks, and then my one I keep for use with other laptops, when showing how it works, and if you went to Microsoft's faq-
Was this where you looked for help ?

    http://social.answers.microsoft.com...e/thread/e89d9a24-6856-41fc-9473-9e71f67aa9d3

You can see the second route to find the readyboost (I just tried it on mine- follow that through, and see if your device shows correctlly with readyboost- mine did )
If that was not the advice you had,It may be easier to do it that way.
Otherwise- I know this might sound daft, but how full is your hard drive? An overlaoded hard drive, with little space can stop you, for instance , when burning to disc- so posible thing to check.

the help forum was not very help full, the format i used was fat by default, and uninstalling and reinstalling did nothing. =(

can you copy anything to your usb stick ?
If not, then itcould be the usb stick faulting -If you have not tried, try copying something to it-if it copies o.k, then as said on that forum at Microsft- check in devices, and printers- assuming your stick shows up there, right click brouse on the device, and see if readyboost shows that way, and if it is enabled- I followed it through , and mine showed the properties, and readyboost tab, that way, as suggested at faq Microsoft

i can copy things to it fine, i went through the directions listed on the micro$oft forum, and many other forums many times with no success( on any other memory stick that doesn't already have rb on it too)

I have had a few memory sticks go funny, and several that would not take readyboost- apparently the speed of the stick can determine if it can use readyboost-
As it worked before, and you have tried the remdies that you found, I am sorry , but I have no other useful information, other than trying another stick to see if its a Windows file corruption causing it
In Windows 7, TO RUN THE SFC /SCANNOW COMMAND, you need to click start, type in command, select it, and type in
sfc /scannow (note the space after sfc )
Press enter, and it should run the main windows file check, and if its a corruption in a Windows file, it will replace the file.
Perhaps someone else might help more, otherwise.

    Hi

When formatting, make sure that "quick format" is NOT checked, sometimes a quick format will not remedy problems that an actual full format will. Best of luck.

With ReadyBoost, there have been users that claim that NTFS and compression is the only thing that works for them.

There's also a chance that some 'tweak' program has 'lost' the chance of you using ReadyBoost at all until it's undone. If the 'tweak' was used before a Windows Update patched something related to this then all bets are off.

There are some registry tweaks that should force ReadyBoost to work with the flash drive - if everything else is standard.

    Hi red40y,

go to control panel/admin tools/services and confirm that the readyboost service is Started and the Startup Type is set to Automatic.
