To make a very long story short, about 3 months ago a guy from MBAM helped me solve a very nasty vundo infection. I had mistakenly installed what I thought was search&destory (turns out it was a malware site). To make matters worse I installed THEIR UNINSTALL program. Yes, I rank in the top 3 worlds dumbest computer users. After 2 days of combfixing this and hijakthising the system was clean.

I run a paid for version of MBAM, free SAS and free AntiVir.

I noticed my AV was turned off on boot about a week ago. Didn't think much of it until my windows FW turned itself off while I was working. I ran an MBAM scan and it found a host of problems including a rootkit.

I contacted MBAM and they're walking me through combofixing again and we've removed a few things so far. I had to reboot this morning and my AV still booting up turned off. I can turn it on, but obviously something is turning it off on boot.

I had been running daily scans with AntiVir and thought I was safe. I did not realize the free SAS offers no realtime protection.

I'm worried the first go-around didn't get everything, and from what I've read a rootkit issue can be the kiss of death and nearly impossible to remove only b/c it is so difficult to find everything.

Question for the forum is: should I just flatten this machine and start over? What's the likelyhood of success?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

I suggest that you continue with them until they give you the all clear.

That's exactly what I did. The guys at MBAM are very helpful and he walked me through combofix and even gave me some great advice and I've installed a few additional layers of protection.
