av resource hog

    Hi, Was running pc tools av and spyware,found them both excellent.Problem is i have so little ram that they slowed my comp down lots.As i cant get any more ram for a while can anyone suggest an av and spyware product/s that will sit in the background and do nothing till i ask them to scan or update.Are there such products ? ... I already have spyware blaster and removeit.Any advice gratefully recieved ... Kwisatz :wave

    What do you mean by "spyware"? Do you mean Spyware Doctor from PC Tools? In your other thread you mentioned having Spyware Guard.

    All protection software require significant use of system resources to protect you. It is a necessary evil. Most requirements are a minimum of 256 MB of RAM in a PC but you will find that Windows XP runs quite poorly with 256 MB of RAM. And processor speed will also have a significant effect.

    These as scan only tools and they will not protect you from malware which means you would have no active protection and could be spending all of your time trying to remove malware or worse....reinstalling it. All kinds of tools (including scan only) are mentioned in the below link:

    You may find AntiVir Personal Edition less resource hungry than PC Tools AntiVirus but I don't think the change will be that significant since the amount of memory you have is just too low.
