avast! Home Edition is now free of charge for HOME users for NON-COMMERCIAL use. You can find more info here. If you are not a home user or you use your computer for profit, you are asked to use the commercial version - avast! Professional Edition.

To use the Home Edition, you should register it. After the installation you have 60 days to do the registration. The registration process is very easy and will take you only a couple of minutes.

All the setup packages are in the form of self-extracting executables and are digitally signed by ALWIL Software.

If you already have the latest avast! installed and would like to add a new language only, you don't have to download the whole program again. You can just modify installed components of avast! program via Control panel -> Add/Remove programs -> avast! Antivirus -> Change/Remove -> Change

    Main New Features
Support for new archives and packers
    Network Shield
Support for new P2P and IM programs
    Transparent email (SMTP/POP3/IMAP4) scanner
    New language packs
    TCP scanning daemon

Thanks NICK, I currently use version 4.1. Can I upgrade to 4.5 just by downloading an upgrade, or do I need a full download? Do I need to un-install 4.1, before going to 4.5? Thought I'd ask here so others can read about it. Bazza

Bazza, I had no problem updating to the 4.5 version. If you haven't already uninstalled, just go to updating then>program update. Done within 2min.

MA, tried the update path before reading answers to my previous post. It obviously didn't work for me as version still shows 4.1 and today a message appeared saying Update broke. I had to leave my PC in the midst of updating yesterday so may missed some error message. Never usually leave my PC, but did that time. My laptop is unbelievably slow this morning. Tried logging off and logging on again but still slow. Think I will download full version of 4.5, gawd knows how long that might take, uninstall 4.1 and install 4.5. More news tomorrow, one way or the other. Bazza

Latest news: Downloaded full version of 4.5 (haven't installed it yet). Uninstalled version 4.1 which I think got corrupted. Ran all my stuff to clean up Regisrty entries that may have been left over. Re-installed v4.1. Speed has returned to my laptop (as fast as a P2/400, W98se can be, that is). Will try the upgrade route again and see what happens. Bazza

24 hours later, or so. Updated version 4.1 to 4.5 through update procedure. Everything went well. Took a while on dialup, though. Have disabled VRDB generation as I regularly use 2 different backup programs. 1 does a cumulative backup, 1 does a full backup. So why should I use VRDB? Bazza

    Hi BAZ :)
    The help file states this
    VRDB

VRDB stands for "Virus Recovery Database"; it was known as "Integrity Database" in previous avast! versions. The aim of VRDB is to help when, despite all the security measures, a virus gets inside the computer and the files are infected. With the help of VRDB, it is possible to repair infected files (return them exactly to their original state). VRBD is announced by an icon with the letter "i" in the system tray (next to the clock). If the icon is animated, the database is being created right now.

    VRDB PRINCIPLE

avast! creates an integrity database, i.e. it stores information about the actual state of the files, doing it three versions back for each file. The database creation/maintenance is performed either when the computer is idle, or when the screen-saver is running (any screen-saver, not only the avast! one). This database, once it is created, is updated each three weeks (this value may be changed by editing avast4.ini).
If any file is infected by a virus, it is possible to repair it, i.e. turn it to its original state. If there are multiple versions of the file in the database, you can choose which version you want to restore.

    SETTINGS

The settings of VRBD can be changed by clicking on the icon in the system tray with the right mouse button. There are three options:

Generate VRDB when computer is idle. avast! will create its database only when the computer is idle, i.e. when it is not being used.
Generate VRDB only when screen-saver is running. avast! will create its database during the time screen-saver is running. It may be any screen-saver, not only the one included in avast!
Disable VRDB generation. avast! will neither create, nor update the database. If you select this option, it will not be possible to repair virus infected files in the future!
    Hope this answers your query

    Regards

Thanks Nick. I have previously read this, compiled and updated a VRDB database.
On my W98SE laptop it is very exceedingly slow and I wonder if I am duplicating effort, time and space. I don't like carrying out this sort of task unattended, as they recommend.
I already use 2 different types of backup and wonder if I am simply duplicating (triplicating??) effort.

Can you let me know the file names of the VRDB so I can keep an eye on file size and times taken to create/update the VRDB. I might give it a try again. Bazza

Thanks NICK. I 'm gonna give it another go, strictly for research sake, to see how long it takes on my W98SE, and what size it ends up at. Thx again. Will report back next week. I will do it over the weekend, probably. Bazza

Would you say avast is better than AVG? :)

I've never used AVG myself, but AVAST is a miracle compared to Norton Pro, which is a god-awful mess. I installed Avast and it cleaned up 20 viruses that Norton Pro had missed.

    Learning As I Go Sergeant

I am a new member to the forum, and I have been posting several messages about my "problems downloading wallpapers". I do have a comment on Avast.
It is fantastic!!!!!!!! I have been very pleased with the following programs: Spybot, Spyware protection from AOL, AdAware, and Avast. My two favorite are AdAware and Avast (especially on Full System Scan) it takes about 30 minutes to run the scan, but it does a great job. I've seen reference to other programs including: CW shredder, Spyware blaster, and Highjack This. I haven't tried any of these because I don't know much about them (any comments would be appreciated). All of these programs are free (I believe).
And this seems to be a great place for DECENT people to share information.
    Thanks to ALL. :)
