avast a firewall?

    Hi i was wondering if Avast is a good enough program to be a firewall. It has an on access scanner and i was just wondering if i need a real firewall or not.

    Avast is only an antivirus program. It is not a firewall. Yes you need a firewall. See the below:

    okay well i heard zone alarm was a resource hog. does Sygate Personal Firewall like that too? can it be compatable with my avast onaccess scanner since it said that dont run more then 2 firewalls at once. and can i actualy stop avast on access scanner if it has no use.

    All firewalls require a fair amount of system resource use. The price of protection is the use of system resources.

    I repeat......Avast is not a firewall! It is an antivirus program. All of the firewalls mentioned will work fine with Avast.

    No! And there won't be any! Symantec purchased Sygate awhile back and the software is no longer supported.

    so is it still a good idea to have sygate firewall as a main firewall and if it is a good idea is it a resource hog? and what other alternatives can i use?

    Sygate works okay for a free application. There probably just will never be any updates for it and no support. Alternatives were already given to you in How to Protect yourself from malware!


    Unless you are willing to purchase a firewall then there are more choices.
