I have a Dell 4500 with XP Home that presently is loaded with WinPatrol v.19 2010 & SUPERAntispyware 4.44.1000.

I would like to know if I could add Avast & Microsoft Essentials as AV protection software?

    Thanks

There have been people who have both avast! and MSE installed and have had no problems but others who have. Installing two Antivirus programs is never a good idea because low level services could conflict with one another.

    Hi tgell!

Thanks so much for the info. I really like the simplicity of the Microsoft E, but just not sure of its worth to help secure my puter.

Which AV programs would you recommend?

    MS Security Essentials is fine.
This start of an article by Fred Langa convinced me.

    Hi plodr!

Thanks also for the nice info. Yea, I found a review on MS E & it was quite nice.

Avast! and the MSE team worked together to ensure compatibility, if your PC has a few spare cycles (modern multicore CPU with 2GB+ of RAM), it should be fine to use both.

They work in slightly different ways at times, this can aid rapid detection of malware, especially when installed on a suspect PC, where MSE can be very slow to detect.

Any reported problems of running both together are likely to be triggered by previous A/V's/security suites not being fully removed or other 3rd party software like virtual CD's, external drives with auto-installed software etc.

    Hi satrow!

Yea, my Dell only has 1GB of RAM. I think I am going to install the MS Essentials AV program. I joined this group while my ole trusty Premio PII was running. About three weeks ago the hard drive finally gave up the ghost.

I was running AVG free on that puter & it was a wonderful product.

I agree. You should not have two anti-virus programs running in the background. If you want to install two anti-virus programs, disable one from running in the background and only use it by manually starting a scan.

Edit: I see satrow has a different opinion. But, most opinions I've seen on this issue have been on the side of not having multiple anti-virus programs running in the background at the same time.
