Personally, I love Avast! However, nobody's experience is the same as the next guy's. Maybe MA got burnt too many times.

However, for a more objective/technical look at Antivirus products, I always go to: http://www.av-comparatives.org/

They list AntiVir as the most effective freeware product.

    I've used:

    Avast
    AVG
    Etrust
    Panda
    Antivir

They have all let me down one time or another. So I see them all as equals ;)

do u have them all installed or only one because i thought ur only supposed to use one at a time

Ditto, with the exception of Etrust. Avast is the only one yet to let ME down, but I don't think I've been in the game as long as Adryn.

Yes! Only have one installed at a time! Running more than one consumes too many resources, and possibly conflicts when both try to lock on the same file, or flag one another's quarantine, so something similar.

With AVG, I got some false positives that killed one of my favourite games.

Panda pooched my system performance, and caused crashes.

Can't remember what my beef with AntiVir was, but I know it burned me once.

Avast used to suffer from more false positives than enough but these days they seem to have their act together and I use Avast Free and have done for a few years, so I have no issues with Avast and it doesnt use too many resources up or slow your PC as you can customise the scan engine fairly well and use only the scannning components you really need, for eg. if you dont p2p then diable the p2p scan engine.

As for whats good, well they all do a fair job, but in the end its where you surf and what you download that is the main malware issue.

Wolfx28, tbh thats all you want, if an AV works for you and keeps you clean from malware, stick with it, not worth changing whats not broken.

Do have a read of this for both this thread of yours and the Mcafee one, it has some great tips for security How to Protect yourself from malware!

False positives, crashes...pretty much what Mada mentioned. Antivir gave me update hell.

    Panda--BSOD
    AVG- BSOD
    Avast-BSOD, false positive
    Etrust-BSOD
    Antivir-Update hell, false positive.

I'm not knocking any of them..the crashes were only once in a very blue moon, and completely unpredictable. This is over the course of years, and Im sure it was a shoddy program update in each case. No AV is perfect.

Because I never get viruses, I cannot tell you the effectiveness of any of them. Etrust was the least resource intrusive I found. Panda was great for a while, then became the most unstable of all of them.

I currently use Avast. The best AV I have EVER used was InnoculateIT, which is the grandaddy of Etrust, and was free for the non commercial version.

Ahhh, yes! That was the problem I had. Pissed me right off.

On an aside, I use a BSOD as a screensaver.

Yeah same, especially when i went to the website, found out the update link was on the dang forum, and the link gave a 404.

Was not pleased in the least bit.

Nah, the memory contents are dumped into a file for debugging purposes. Its not going to physically hurt a thing.

Following many antivirus comparative, Avast Free Edtion is the best Free Antivirus program, i personnaly used it and it was fine, but be carefull, there are false Avast Antivirus Programs in the net, here is a preview of what i say :

    REAL Avast Site : English version ==>http://www.avast.com/index.html ( Real French version==> http://www.avast.com/index_fre.html)
    Fake Avast Site : http://www.avast.fr/

I'll advice u to personnaly download Avast Free in the Real Home Site and get ur own free key;)

the fake site is recomended by cnet.com i thought that site was pretty good and makeing sure everything is clean or atleast most of it

i have the real version of avast tho:) i got it from the malwear link anyways so if it was fake MG would be to blame:p

Check the file server. files.avast.com on the "fake" site. Fake version? Hmmm... Fake site, maybe, but they are serving the real deal. Same file size as latest version even. If you want me to, I'll compare MD5 hashes. That, and download it from here. Majorgeeks is gracious enough to provide this forum, support them in the process.
