    Hello all

When I navigate towards hotmail, I get this popping up in a nice grey box:-

Spybot-S&D reports that you want to download “/Avenue A, Inc.” This is a known threat. Do you want to block this download?

Earlier today it was doing this when I wanted to go to Majorgeek. Without actually trying too many sites, it doesn't seem to affect anywhere else.

I have run Spybot and Avira Antivir and they havent found anything on my machine. What gives, expert ones?

While I'm on, how stupid/pointless/dangerous is it to have spybot and Avira Antivir both loaded and active? I did this because 'System Mechanic' and Zone Alarm both kept shouting at me (thats the trouble with security software - pushy isn't in it!) that I didn't have an active antivirus programme installed, even though Spybot has been on my machine/s for years (long before Zone Alarm!). The deciding factor was that they are both free, always a powerful point in my decision making process.

    Thanks in advance

    Tim

Avenue a is just a cookie and is not a problem. Read step 11 of the below link:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

Unless you are using Spybot's Teatimer it is not running and active. You should read and work thru all of the above link. You will note that you need to have one antivirus, one realtime antispyware blocking tool, and a software firewall installed. Spybot is not an antivirus program. However Avira Antivir is!

Hello & thanks for the answer.

I'm working through that useful post you pointed me at. One jargon problem though - Spybot 'teatimer' - ??

It does scan/destroy or immunise, thats it as far as I can see. I think I need to do something, after /Avenue A, Inc. its now telling me to block something else on Hotmail and Majorgeek which looks like a cookie too.

I see zonealarm is not recommended, which is fine, I dislike the way there are no interogation / report facilities (I'm trying to learn something here!) so I will go for an alternative firewall & then a blocking tool

    Thanks again

    Tim

Spybot has a function which can be enable during installation or later from the Advance mode menu. It is called Teatimer and it provides realtime blocking. We recommended not using this in a couple of stickies due to a history of issues surrounding it. One being many people found it to slow their PCs down too much and also it seems to make manual removal of malware more difficult when Teatimer is running.

That is not what that link says. It just says that to get the Free edition, you must download the whole security suite application and then make sure you only install the firewall.
