I am following through Read Me First thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 and the Avert stinger found 454 problems but could not repair/remove 199 of them, (medium risk) stating that I have to purchase their product first. Any suggestions aside from breaking the piggy bank? I am on win px and ran scans in regular mode as I'm scared that i don't know enough of what i'm doing to go to safe mode. Thanks, babeinthewood

did you run the trendmicro online scan? or the symantec? Panda also has a good one.

    Here are a few more:

And with the exception of McAfee, you don't have to give your credit card information. However, for CA(Computer Associates), you have to fill out a form which includes your name, address, and telephone number. It's a temporary fix until you're able to get a good anit-virus program, but I hope it solves your problems for now.

Do you have a full anti-virus program installed on your machine? if so, update it, reboot to safemode (f8 key on boot), and run a scan. if you don't have one, you can download AVG or AVAST (both free), update it, reboot to safemode and run a scan.

Yes, I have EZ AV and EZ Firewall. I also run ccleaner and then ad-aware SE (updated version) everytime i log off. Spybot also found a problem that it can't remove, back web lite. But I guess thats another problem. The registry mechanic, (yes i still try it) will find a ton of problems, yet is only able to repair 1 each time and again asks for me to purchase the full version to repair all others.

As i mentioned before, i have a fear of rebooting in safe mode :( because i really don't know what i'm doing "hangs head in shame".

I'll try it now, thank you all so much for your help. This might be the only site that i dont feel compelled to check for adware, malware, etc. after visiting. Babe

Back Web and Back Web are legit. They are used by several different software and hardware manufacturers to keep their programs up2date. Removing Back Web and Back Web Lite will break several programs that are on your computer. Programs like Spybot notify you that it is on the system, but by default it won't remove it.

Many of the Anti-virus scanners, including Avert stinger, have problems removing infections when ran in 'Normal Mode'. That is why it is recommended to run these programs in 'Safe Mode' when trying to remove a know system infection.

this is in response to the back web lite issue that seems to be popping up everywhere. I recently solved a problem that i had with the back web lite. It turns out that after i had downloaded and used a program called F Secure antirus protector that back web lite began to show up quite a bit. infact on my first scans after installing when i ran spybot search and destroy it showed as much as 57 instances of back web lite. It turns out that many have found away to exploit this updater back web lite......after carefull backtracking i decided to uninstall F Secure and the problem seemed to go away except for when i rebooted i would get an annoying back web lite run time error. No matter what i did it would not go away and than it hit me. i looked through the msconfig services start up file....under XP it is the services tab when you run msconfig and low and behold there was a start up file labled f-secure and its signature was unknown after unchecking it and rebooting my system.........no more run time error. Now i will go in and edit my services start up file to totally remove this file just incase that it desides that it wants to come back but this should give you some insite on how to get rid of tracer start up files in reguards to back web lite.

I have heard that there are several others that have the back web lite auto updater. found on hp's and compact computers and software well since i'm a custom builder i wouldn't most likely be running some of there associated files but your system start up under msconfig might give you a clue escpecially the services file..........
