AVG 8.0 Free error

I am trying to install AVG 8.0 Free on my dad's Emachine (T3990) with Windows XP SP2.
Has 80 GB HDD (OS C) with 65GB Free, RAM 2GB(new). Virtual memory for some reason I don't understand maxes out at 720MB. AVG installation hangs and does not complete. giving error message with code 0xe001042c. Can you help or explain? Just reinstalled Avast AV (prefer AVG) and it caught 3 worms right away that we quarantined.
Not sure if that has any effect or not. Thanks for checking this out for me. I am trying to help him via phone and it is difficult at best. Any help is greatly appreciated. Now with Avast virus update just got system detected rpc error. I do know that his computer has been shutting down just as soon as you try to do anything. I can hear the fan working and see it turning on the power supply. This also had a temperature problem about a week ago - temp was registering in the upper 50sC. Now it is 35 C.:confused

 

Can you help me with configuring the remote desktop? Or direct me to a link that I can understand? I do OK on most things but when it gets too technical I get lost[am self taught in self defense d/t previous computers - never had a computer course in my life.] Here's hoping...
