I have used AVG Anti-Spyware for some time, but it is no longer supported as of 12/31/08, and the program prompts me to update to AVG 8.0 free. I use Avast for my anti-virus program, and don't want to change that. Does anyone know if you can turn off (or not install) the anti-virus portion of AVG 8.0, and just use the anti-spyware part?

Not sure of the stand alone ant spyware but...
From the overview panel it should allow you to disable any portion of AVG. (avg free)
avg8.0free contains all he modules, spy, mail, virus etc. I have it up and running on one of my pc's.
So I say do the avg8free then just disable the anti viral from the overview panel.

I don't think it will be that easy. Antivirus are purposely made to be difficult to disable. If not then many forms of malware would easily defeat them. You can turn off the security center but the protection module and services will usually be still active.

I think a better solution would be to use SUPERAntiSpyware and/or MalwareBytes as your antispyware scanners and let AVG go. Both have free versions and available here at MajorGeeks. They use them in the malware removal forum so that is an indication they work well.

Thanks to both posters. I already have Super Anti-Spyware and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed. Maybe I'll create a restore point, install AVG 8.0 free, and see what it is like. Thanks.

Being cheap, I was using the free version! I don't recall anything about it being a "trial" version.
