AVG and norton online security check

I got Win98SE on my computer and got avg7.0 free edition. When i run norton online security check it shows that my firewall(sygate free) is working properly but that i dont have an antivirus program. Is that right or is it that norton does not recognize avg. Also, when i open taskmanager it shows smcc.exe as "not responding" i think i read on the boards thats its a bug with avg and it is actually running and it shows avgcc.exe as running. All the shields are actiivated. So, is AVG really running or should i be worried ?

When I had Win98SE on my other computer, I found that an online security check didn't recoginize AVG either even though it was working fine.

 

thanks. I just changed from norton internet security to AVG and sygate free firewall and wanted to be sure it works. So far satisfied with both.

 

Just monitor your computer, since you switched programs from Norton. My old computer had Norton, my subscription ran out, so I chose a freebie AntiVirus and Firewall. Even though I had uninstalled Norton from the "Add/Remove" panel, I was told that Norton leaves behind "hidden" files. Unfortunatly, I was told that it conflicted with the other freebie program, and I had to take it into the shop for someone to clean out the computer of all Norton files.

My own personal opinion,...... I had nothing but problems with Norton. The fix it shop that I've used highly recommended the free AVG AntiVirus, and free ZoneAlarm or Sygate FireWall.

Since using these, I haven't had problems, and found that the old computer was faster without Norton.

They told me to use only 1 FireWall, and 1 AntiVirus as you can run into conflicts.

For those who may not know it AVG has a new 7.0 version. I've been using it for a while now, but I can't be sure it's working as I haven't gotten any viruses(knock on wood)! I do know that the 6.0 version worked, because it caught a couple of trojans for me so I have to assume this one works too. Having only one computer I don't really use a firewall because there are so many things that firewalls block that it makes it real hard to navigate online sometimes. I do keep a good anti-spyware program. Ad-Aware SE personnal(Lavasoft.com) and Spybot S&D are well known and seem to work pretty good I prefer Ad-Aware. The latest version doesn't seem to conflict with Spybot so I use both.
