AVG Antivirus question that's not about a virus.

I analyzed my hard drive before I defragmented it to see which files were fragmented and an AVG file showed up as being 821mbs! It showed it's path or location (whatever), so I tried to find it but I couldn't! I couldn't find this huge file anywhere on my computer. Can someone help me?

Here's a picture of when I analyzed my hard drive. In the picture it lists the location but that location and file doesn't exist, or I just can't find it. I'd like to find out why this file is so huge.

Do you have "show hidden files and folders" enabled?

Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, then View tab.

    Cool, thanks. I found it.

Now this is what happens when I try to view the huge log file. I don't have another editor to edit or view the file. Why is that file so freakin' huge?

    Use Wordpad or Word.

You should at least have Wordpad. It's in Start, accessories, or you can install it from your Windows CD.

Still can't do it! I tried using Wordpad and Word and this is what I got. It makes me angry that the file is so huge! Why is it hogging so much space!?

    Oh that freakin' salt!

I guess I'll just delete the file and report back what happens.

If you are going to delete it, at least make a copy, and create a Restore Point first.

    And lay off the salt.

Yeah, what he /\ said :D

I empty it periodically, so to me, it's STD*

    *safe to delete

    :D

Besides, what's the worst that can happen: reinstall AVG, which will delete the file anyway, takes all of 5 minutes :)

Reinstalling AVG may take all of five minutes, but setting up email scanners for different accounts, and all the other settings take a bit longer.

I work on the theory that it's better safe than sorry.

It's far easier creating a backup of a file than reinstalling a program.

It doesn't hurt to do so usually, and that's what I always do.

Maybe that's also why I hardly ever have any problems?

Anyway, I don't use AVG. If you do and you have deleted the file, then it's obviously safe to do so.

I've only asked for help one time in 3+ years here....btw, what's a backup? :D

AVG's email scanner will cover all the accounts automatically during installation if it is installed and configured properly. I do use AVG for now, I wouldn't answer him unless I would do the same thing for myself. The software puppets at work are writing a new AV for us and will use that when they have it completed, probably around the first of the year.

Abby just checked hers; it's 68.3 megs ;)

I tried deleting the file but it won't let me. I'm going to uninstall and reinstall AVG and see if that works. Thank you both for the help. I'll post my results.

Odd, I just dumped mine, although it was only at 2.3 megs. I'll do the uninstall/reinstall thing myself and be back in a few :)

If you're not back, then it will be problem #2 in 3+ years. :)

ColonelAngus, try deleting in Safe Mode, or with AVG not running, or failing all that, use something like POCKET KILLBOX.

Uninstalling AVG should be a last resort, and there is no guarantees that the file won't still be there.

    Wayell, you'd like that :D

Uninstalled, registry-cleaned, dumped program folder & application data folder, downloaded, reinstalled, updated, file recreates itself at 0.4 megs. Only thing I can think of adding that I do is I have that folder included in the purging when I run EmptyTempFolders.

I uninstalled AVG and that got rid of the huge file. I used my SystemSuite 4.0 to clean my regestry and crap files to make sure I got rid of everything. I used the FixUp option in my SystemSuite 4.0 and it said there were errors on my hard drive after I uninstalled AVG! I used my Windows XP disc and ran chkdsk /r to fix it and that worked. It took a long time though.

I just reinstalled AVG and it said that I have an outdated verion of Roxio Easy CD creator that may cause problems with AVG. I like the version of Easy CD Creator I have so I'm not changing it.

Everything works fine and the huge log file is gone. I guess the conflict with Easy CD Creator could be why the log file got so big. If it happens again I'll just uninstall and reinstall AVG again. No big deal.

Thanks again to both of you for the help.

I'm glad I noticed the size of the file when I was defragmenting. It could have gotten super huge!
