Hey, finally got the courage today to do ONE computer, the update from .176 to...well, now it's already at .237. (It was at .233, when I was too scared to run the update because so many people were having problems with it.)

I checked the settings and there have been some changes, so just a heads up here to all you AVG free 8 users to give your 'Advanced' settings another look. For example, something that I was quite pleased to see is that they've added an option to scan external media drives, like flash drives. However, this is not enabled by default. I enabled it and plugged in my flash drive and AVG scanned the whole thing immediately, without my telling it to do so.

Oh, BTW...it took 2 reboots to get everything on the laptop working correctly. The first start up was OK, but the shut down was a white knuckle experience, with one of my programs not working at all and a couple of its features hanging (had to end them manually), and then the Windows logging off hanging for several minutes. But I walked away, went and got a cup of coffee and let Windows shut down on its own. It booted up nicely, everything was fine. I rebooted a third time just to be sure, and all is well.

It's always good to keep your virus software up to date. At best (since it's free) you'd have to uninstall and re install but, at worst, you choose not to upgrade and it won't provide the protection you need and you wind up with a virus your old software couldn't detect or protect you from.

:) I've now got the desktop PC upgraded and that went seamlessly. I'm very pleased with how AVG is functioning on both my computers. Considering the baddies that are out there in cyberspace these days (it's getting REALLY scary out there!), I'm glad to have everything up to date.

How's your Windows updates and antispyware? They are just as important to your machines defense.

Windows updates are up to date. I have SuperAntispyware and Malwarebytes, free versions, updated and run daily. AVG free 8 also has resident antispyware, which is why I don't want another one running in the background.

Multiple Antispyware programs are OK. It's when you have multiple antivirus programs that you have problems.
